Women travelling to England for abortions

13 June 2017

New figures show that 180 women travelled from Scotland to England for an abortion last year.

The British Pregnancy Advisory Service said this highlighted the difficulty in obtaining late-stage terminations for women north of the border.

The law currently allows the procedure up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, and 73 of the 180 women who travelled south were at least 20 weeks pregnant.

The Supreme Court on Monday relaxed the 20-week legal ceiling on abortion to allow a woman to abort her 24-week baby with anencephaly, a life-threatening congenital defect where a baby is born without parts of the brain, skull and scalp.

India’s Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act legalises abortions up to 20 weeks if there is threat to the mother’s life or her physical or mental health, or if the unborn baby has abnormalities, but many women end up using unsafe abortions methods because they don’t know where or who to go because there are not enough legal providers. Many don’t even know it’s legal to abort up to 20 weeks.

Doctors in the city are disappointed that the Supreme Court’s judgment on abortion did not include a permanent mechanism for future cases in which women seek an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The Supreme Court on Monday allowed a 24-weeks pregnant Dombivli resident to abort her foetus that has a rare birth defect.

Donald Trump’s views on abortion are dangerous – and even British women aren’t safe

by Ann Furedi Chief executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service

Donald Trump sought to flex his pro-life credentials in this week’s third and final presidential debate by painting a gruesome picture of late term abortion. He claimed that his rival, Hillary Clinton, would allow doctors to 'rip the baby out of the womb' just days before birth.

The presidential candidate, who has jumped gamely between various positions on abortion – from declaring himself pro-choice to calling for “some sort of punishment” for women who have abortions (before rowing back on that one too) – also said he would appoint judges who would overturn Roe v Wade, America’s constitutional right to abortion.
