Saoirse Ronan and fellow Irish actors stand in powerful video to repeal the eight amendment

Saoirse Ronan, Cillian Murphy, Andrew Scott and Liam Cunningham are among a list of top Irish actors who are showing their support behind the ‘Together For Yes’ campaign in a brand new video published on the campaign's social media channels this evening.

The powerful and chilling video lists the variety of ways in which women are currently affected by the 8th Amendment in this country and calls for this to change, saying: “For women’s safety, for a just society, for a fairer Ireland”.

There are times when we must stand for what is right. When the obvious injustice of a situation demands that we do so. For me, the upcoming referendum on the Eighth Amendment is one of those times. A time to stand up and be counted. A moment when men must stand with women.

Men owe a debt to women in Ireland. For too long, we have at best stood by and at worst participated in a system that has stripped women of their human rights. Ireland has inflicted indignity and abuse on women for generations, and on a grand scale. In recent decades we have demonstrated the capacity to face the truth of such abuse, to own it and to do whatever we can to respond to it. And that is to our great credit.

Ireland: Liam Neeson steps down from Ballymena boxing club amid abortion row

LIAM Neeson has stood down as president of his childhood boxing club amid reports of a disagreement over his support for changes to abortion laws.

The Hollywood actor was head of All Saints Amateur Boxing Club in his home town of Ballymena, where he trained from the age of nine.

It is understood Neeson left his role after narrating a campaign video calling for a repeal of the Irish constitution's eighth amendment.
