What Facebook Unwittingly Reveals in its Ban of LifeSiteNews for COVID Misinformation

Facebook’s ban of LifeSiteNews a notoriously
ultraconservative website that regularly spreads disinformation about
abortion—for its COVID violations—puts into sharp relief the tolerance of
misogyny and violence against women on Facebook and in our culture more
broadly.

While many may have missed this decision in the midst of the controversy over
Facebook’s ban of Trump, the rationale for the ban of LifeSiteNews was the
spreading of “false information about COVID-19 that could contribute to
physical harm,” an action that violates Facebook’s COVID-19 policies. The
website was banned from YouTube in February for similar reasons.

YouTube Just Banned a Popular Anti-Abortion Channel for COVID Conspiracies

One of its videos featured a doctor who called the pandemic “the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on an unsuspecting public.”

YouTube has banned LifeSiteNews, an anti-abortion outlet that bills itself as the “#1 pro-life news website,” for repeatedly sharing videos that spread misinformation about COVID-19 and the vaccines against it.

“In accordance with our longstanding strikes system, we terminated the channel LifeSiteNews Media for repeatedly violating our COVID-19 misinformation policy, which prohibits content that promotes prevention methods that contradict local health authorities or WHO,” Ivy Choi, a YouTube spokesperson, told VICE News in an email.

FOLLOWING our March 15 report that Roger Kiska, above, of Alliance Defending Freedom, was voicing his anger over an exclusion area outside a London abortion clinic, comes news that another American – ‘pro-life’ congressman Chris Smith, above – is demanding that the British government reverse its decision to impose UK abortion laws on Northern Ireland.

According to far-right Christian website LifeSiteNews, Smith has written to the UK Secretary of State for N Ireland calling on him to refer the province’s abortion laws back to the region’s own devolved government. In a letter co-signed by fellow members of Congress Andy Harris, Ann Wagner and Vicky Hartzler, Smith wrote:
