Unsafe Abortions Derail Malawi’s Progress on Maternal Health

With unsafe abortions contributing to 18% of maternal deaths, Malawi finds itself facing a dilemma in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of reducing maternal mortality to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030.

Sitting on the veranda of her house in Bangwe Township, located in the southern Malawian city of Blantyre, 56-year-old Manesi Kamolo sheds tears as she recounts in an interview how her 17-year-old daughter died.

According to Kamolo, her daughter became pregnant after being raped while returning from school. “My daughter revealed to me that she was pregnant as a result of the rape,” she explains. “The discovery of the pregnancy haunted her. She told me she never wanted to keep the pregnancy as she wanted to continue with her education.”

Beware men: five years for forcing women to abort

Among other reasons on why women terminate pregnancy is because they are forced by men who impregnate them, but the revised termination of pregnancy bill seeks to have such men given a maximum jail term of five years.

Confirming on the new development, chief law reform officer at Malawi Law Commission Mike Chinoko said when the bill is approved to be a law, men are to be jailed if reported to have forced women terminate pregnancy.

Malawi’s CSOs accuse religious leaders of double standards on abortion bill, ready to name and shame them in public

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Some of the prominent country’s Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on Friday took a swipe at religious leaders who petitioned Parliament in December 2016 against proposed law and policy reforms on safe abortion accusing them of double standards on the matter.

The CSOs including Malawi Human Rights Resource Center (MHRRC), NGO Gender Coordinating Network (NGO GCN), Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC), Center for Human Rights Rehabilitation (CHRR) among others vowed further to name and shame some religious leaders for their misdeeds in the public arguing that they are also promoters of unsafe abortion.
