How Polish women are resisting the latest attempt to ban abortion

“Support for women came thick and fast both domestically and further afield, with opposition to the judgement coming from groups not typically associated with women’s rights, such as farmers and miners.” European Studies graduate Charlotte Killeen outlines the national and Europe-wide reactions to Poland’s near-total ban on abortion.

Protests have taken place in cities and towns across Poland following a ruling by the country’s Constitutional Tribunal that allowing abortion in cases of foetal abnormalities is unconstitutional.

Even before the ruling, Poland’s policy of allowing abortion only in cases of rape or incest, threat to the life or health of the woman and foetal abnormalities was one of the most restrictive in the EU, with only Malta’s total ban going further. It is the latest setback for the women’s rights movement in Poland, coming on the heels of a government announcement in July that it intends to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence.

Row over ruling on ‘eugenic abortion’ disturbs Lower House session

27.10.2020

Tuesday’s Lower House proceedings were disrupted by opposition MPs of the Left (Lewica) and Civic Coalition (KO) who protested the Constitutional Court’s ruling on “eugenic abortion” that had triggered public protests in some major Polish cities. The misconduct urged the deputy Lower House speaker to call for the guards to alleviate the tense situation.

The Lower House two-days-long session begun on Tuesday with the house’s Deputy Speaker Ryszard Terlecki of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party commenting on Left and KO MPs’ facemasks that were marked with the Red Lightning – the symbol of the Women’s Strike movement that has been protesting the ruling of the Constitutional Court on “eugenic abortion” for the past couple of days.

A discussion with the Polish Greens on abortion and women’s rights

Oct 25, 2016

Recently, Eliana Capretti from the European Green Party spoke to the leader of the Polish greens, Malgorzata Tracz, about the Black Protest and the continuing struggle for abortion rights in Poland.

The Greens are one of the main members of the “Ratujmy Kobiety” (rescue women) committee that gathered over 215,000 signatures for the liberalisation of the abortion law. When the Polish Parliament decided to proceed with the “Stop abortion” project and reject the liberalisation project “Ratujmy Kobiety”, ‘black protests’ started in Poland. This was the first time in modern Polish history that hundreds of thousands of Poles protested on the streets to protect women’s rights. The Greens took part in the main protests and demonstrations. Right now they continue fighting for the liberalisation of an abortion law and are co-organising the second “Polish women on strike” protest (second black Monday). This interview was originally published on the website of the European Greens.
