Simon Harris includes new funds for abortion bill to meet its pledges

Resources for abortion services, including improved ultrasound scan services in maternity hospitals, will be included in this year’s budget, The Times understands.
Simon Harris, the health minister, will join on Saturday a March for Choice, the first since the referendum in May, when voters supported an end to the ban.

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Dublin Saturday for the annual March for Choice, a demonstration calling on Ireland’s government to ease its near-total abortion ban. It was the first major rally organized by pro-choice advocates since the government announced an upcoming referendum: Next summer, the country will vote on whether it should change its abortion laws. The advocates told me that if the referendum works out in their favor, they may not have to organize any more marches.
But it’s not yet clear how likely the laws are to change, or even what changes will be proposed. The exact wording of the vote is not expected to be determined before December.

Restrict ‘keyboard warriors’ in abortion debate

Reporting restrictions imposed on broadcast stations during referendums should be adopted for the online world due to the “horrible” nature of “keyboard warrior” attacks during the early stages of the pro-choice and pro-life Eighth Amendment campaigns, writes Fiachra O’Cionnaith.
Labour TD Joan Burton and Fianna Fáil health spokesperson Billy Kelleher said Government should consider the move in a bid to limit the potential damage caused by the most extreme elements of both campaigns during the debate on the issue over the coming months.

WHAT DID THE world’s media make of Ireland’s pro-choice march yesterday?
When Leo Varadkar was ordained as Taoiseach in June, we saw Ireland repeatedly referred to in foreign news outlets as an insular, conservative, Catholic nation.
After the success of the Yes Equality campaign, and with an ethnically diverse, young, gay man chosen as Ireland’s political leader (albeit not by the electorate), that world view of Ireland could be in the process of shifting.

In the Republic of Ireland, thanks to the Eighth Amendment to the constitution, abortion is almost entirely illegal. There are a few exceptions, only signed into law in 2013, which provide for a legal abortion in cases where the pregnant person’s life is at risk, but otherwise anyone who undergoes an abortion in-country can face up to 14 years in jail. (Remember how terrifying it was when Trump suggested there should be “some form” of punishment for women who get an abortion? Irish people are living that nightmare right now.)

March for Choice: Edinburgh shows solidarity with the women of Ireland

These words rang clear in the air outside the Scottish Parliament on Saturday September 30 as men, women, and children showed their solidarity with the women of Ireland.
This protest was organised by the Scottish Irish Abortion Rights Campaign (SIARC) in support of the 6th annual March for Choice.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Dublin on Saturday calling for the liberalisation of Ireland’s abortion laws.
The demonstration began at the Garden of Remembrance at 2pm and progressed down O’Connell Street, before turning onto the quays and crossing over the Liffey. From there it proceeded up Pearse Street and towards the rally area in Merrion Square.

Abortion is a black and white issue. Those Repeal jumpers, designed in anger last year by campaigner Anna Cosgrave, have become a ubiquitous fashion and political statement.
On Saturday lunchtime there were thousands of them in evidence. Those elemental colours, symbolising darkness and light, stood out against the bright shafts of sunlight glinting on the ornamental pool in the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square in Dublin.

Minister for Children Katherine Zappone has said she believes the public would not support a referendum proposing the extensive liberalisation of Ireland’s abortion laws recommended by the Citizens’ Assembly.
Her comments come as the Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment said it would oppose any “watering down” of the assembly recommendations, including the recommendation of 64 per cent of its members that termination of pregnancy without restriction should be lawful.

On Saturday 30 September 2017, the Abortion Rights Campaign (ARC) – a pro-choice alliance of which I am a member – is hosting its sixth annual March for Choice in Dublin city centre. It is a particularly significant event, as it will be our last march before next year’s referendum over whether to repeal the eighth amendment, the law that gives a foetus the same right to life as the mother.
In the summer of 2012, a few small pro-choice groups met up in Dublin to discuss collaborating. The result, the formation of the Irish Choice Network, gained momentum so quickly that the founders realised an even larger, all-island movement was needed. And so the ARC was formed.
