AFTER 15 HOURS of debate this week, the abortion legislation is yet to pass Report Stage in the Dáil.

It is likely the landmark bill to regulate abortion services in Ireland will pass in the Dáil at the earliest next week.

Attempts to fully decriminalise abortion as part of new legislation have failed following a debate in the Dáil.

A number of TDs called on Minister for Health Simon Harris to support amendments to the Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill which would see doctors protected from criminalisation where they act in good faith, and which would drop the current 14 year jail term.

Minister for Health Simon Harris has criticised attempts to change the proposed abortion law so that taxpayers’ money would not be used to enable a woman to have access to abortion services.

Independent TD Carol Nolan, formerly of Sinn Féin, sought to introduce the new provision to the proposed abortion legislation saying that “free abortions will mean more abortions”.

This was the text that arrived in the inbox of Fianna Fáil TDs and Senators on Tuesday afternoon at 12.39pm about an event for those opposing the repeal of the Eighth Amendment.
