There has been a drop of up to 85% in the number of Irish women travelling to Britain for abortions, one year on since the Eighth Amendment was repealed from the Irish Constitution.
Nine women had been leaving Ireland every day to have a termination in Britain.
6,000 crisis pregnancy calls since abortion legalised

There have been 6,000 calls to the HSE’s crisis pregnancy helpline since abortion was legalised in Ireland.
In January, the MyOptions helpline received 1,925 calls for information and counselling and 387 nursing-related queries.
Ten out of 19 maternity units have abortion services in place
The HSE has said that “service demand remains within the predicted limits” in relation to abortion services.

THERE ARE 10 maternity units providing abortion services out of a total of 19 units across the country, over three months after Ireland’s abortion laws have been legalised.
The HSE has said that nine maternity units had provided abortion services from the start of this year, and that one additional maternity unit had since begun to offer the service.

Anti-abortion activist vows to fight HSE over website

The anti-abortion campaigner ordered by the High Court to stop using a website with a name similar to the HSE’s abortion advice service has said he will counter-sue the HSE for unlawful claim on the title.
Eamonn Murphy is temporarily injuncted from using the phrase “my options” — the name used by the HSE — but he has set up a new website, using the words ‘my abortion choices’.

An anti-abortion activist has insisted that a new website he has launched is not covered by a High Court injunction secured against him for a separate site which was alleged to be confusingly similar to the official HSE crisis pregnancy service offering.
The site, myabortionchoices.com, is similar in design and content to another site run by Eamonn Murphy, which was the subject of the injunction sought by the health service last week.

Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner and public health services agency are reportedly investigating how the private data of a patient who had an abortion may have landed in the hands of a harasser.
In an anonymous Facebook post, a woman from Ireland said that after she had a medical abortion and an internal scan at the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin, someone left her a suspicious voicemail telling her to schedule another scan. The individual who left the message knew both her name and her address, and later sent a text message with directions to their office, according to the woman’s posts. But Irish news site the Journal reports that the caller did not actually work for the hospital, and it is not known how they allegedly obtained her private information.

Anti-abortion activists ‘getting details’ of cases

Anti-abortion activists who tried to coax a woman into a fake scan appointment also tried to report a separate termination to gardaí last week, The Times can reveal.
Activists working for the Good Counsel Network, which runs a rogue crisis pregnancy agency in Dublin, turned up at Drogheda garda station claiming to have knowledge about an abortion performed at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital. They called for the doctors involved to be investigated and possibly prosecuted.

Next week will mark one month since the introduction of general abortion services for the first time in the history of the Irish State. In the final weeks of 2018, there were dire warnings from senior medics and family doctors that the January 1st deadline was being “rushed” and was “dangerously unrealistic”.
Only nine maternity hospitals were ready to provide full access to abortion care, with the remaining 10 expected to come on board shortly. Some 240 general practitioners have now signed up to the service. Despite the less than comprehensive level of access, abortions are now happening across the country in hospitals and in general practices.

It may be the most overused word in politics, but, if anything deserves to be called "historic", the launch of legal abortion services in Ireland undoubtedly qualifies.
As of the first day of January, Irish women will now be offered terminations of pregnancy free of charge at home rather than having to travel to another country, and 20 of them called the HSE-funded MyOptions hotline in the first 24 hours of 2019 to speak to counsellors.

No abortions are being provided in Sligo, Leitrim, Carlow and Offaly because not a single GP in the four counties has signed up to the new service.
At the end of the first week since abortion became legal, the number of GPs who have agreed to perform medical abortions has risen to 200, from 187 on Wednesday.
