Fake abortion website faces legal action

Legal proceedings have been issued against the operator of a bogus website which is posing as the official HSE information service for women with unplanned pregnancies.

MyOptions.ie, which offers free support and gives details on how to access abortion services, was started by the HSE on January 1 when the new law on terminations came into effect. Soon after, anti-abortion campaigners set up a website using a similar name.

Anti-abortion activists have struck back against Ireland’s introduction of abortion services by picketing a clinic and by launching potentially misleading websites that mimic the state’s support service for unplanned pregnancies.

A group holding placards protested outside a doctor’s office in Galway on Thursday in an effort to deter women from seeking abortion pills just three days after abortion services became legal.

HSE launches website with information on abortion services

The HSE has launched a website with information on abortion services in Ireland.

It comes after President Michael D Higgins signed the legislation to allow for abortion services in Ireland to be put into law on Thursday.

The myoptions.ie section of the HSE website details information on how to get an abortion, abortion methods, aftercare and the possible risks involved.

There are 22 days to go before the roll-out of abortion services on January 1. It should be a historic occasion when the overwhelming support shown by Irish voters for a woman's right to choose becomes reality.

But as the deadline looms, disquiet among some doctors that it is ambitious to the point of being unsafe has grown louder.
