USA – We Need Courageous Leaders Who Stand Up to Anti-Abortion Extremists

Anti-abortion violence has increased significantly since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Our political leaders must not cower.

While headlines focus on politicians’ efforts to ban abortion at the state and national levels, anti-abortion forces are also working at the local level to erode abortion access—even in deep blue states such as Massachusetts. In addition to pumping massive funds into anti-abortion fake clinics in blue states, they are also working to block municipal protections for abortion healthcare by using threats and legal intimidation.

Recently, in the progressive Western Massachusetts city of Easthampton, both the mayor and city council president—both Democrats that claim to support abortion rights—voted against an ordinance to protect access to reproductive healthcare and gender-affirming care. The ordinance was supported by over 20 reproductive and trans rights groups in the community, who were perplexed and frustrated by their actions.

Ten women walk along a busy, fluorescent-lit corridor. Undressed from the waist down, they wear big white sheets, knotted over their hips, as they make their way to the "relaxation room", a windowless space, equipped with large sofas and a TV. There they wait, mostly in silence, for their turn to have an abortion.

This is Hope Medical Group for Women, a small abortion clinic in the US city of Shreveport serving an ever-expanding 200-mile radius through rural Louisiana and all the way to Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi.

Abortion AMA: Can My OB-GYN Provide An Abortion?

I made two phone calls the moment I found out I was pregnant: one to my best friend and one to my OB-GYN's office. I figured if anyone could tolerate me repeatedly saying "no f*cking way,” it would be my BFF. And if anyone knew anything about ending an unwanted pregnancy, it would be my gynecologist. After all, abortion is a common, safe, and legal medical procedure, which is why I never thought to ask, "Can my OB-GYN provide an abortion?"

But, much to my surprise, my doctor couldn't. I am embarrassed to admit I didn't push the issue and ask her why (to be fair, I was pretty distracted at the time). She still gave me plenty of information and a great referral, but it turns out my experience is common.
