Reproductive rights rest on the recognition of the basic right of all couples and individuals to decide freely and responsibly the number, spacing and timing of their children and to have the information and means to do so, and the right to attain the highest standard of sexual and reproductive health. They also include the right of all to make decisions concerning reproduction free of discrimination, coercion and violence.

Hauwa Isah* (name changed to protect identity) was 16 when she got married to a 25-year-old man her family chose for her. Living in a rural village Ibeto, Magama Local government area of Niger state doesn’t come with a lot of prospects for anyone, much more females, she said. “Here, as a woman you are expected to grow up, get married and have babies. Anything other than that is travesty,” she said in Hausa.

The highly elated accountant, who works with a firm in Lagos, told our correspondent that she has been on the implant method of family planning since the past six months.

Mrs. Adeyemi said, “I was introduced to the Implant at Primary Health Care Centre, Mascara, in Alapere, Ikosi Agoyi-Ketu. Some tests were carried out before the implant was inserted on my arm.

NPC charges Sultan, Emir others to preach family planning

KANO—The National Population Commission, NPC, yesterday, charged the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar; Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi II; fiery Islamic cleric, Malam Abubakar Gumi, and other eminent traditional and religious leaders in the North to champion the spread of family planning gospel in the region.

The Commission’s Chairman, Chief Eze Duruiheoma, while celebrating this year’s World Population Day in Kano, said their involvement was for the sake of building a healthy and prosperous society.
