Ghana – Religious, societal beliefs on contraceptives causing unsafe abortion – NPC

By Richard Kofi Boahen

Dr. Davis Yeboah Aboagye, the Bono Regional Officer of the National Population Council (NPC) says religious and certain socio-cultural beliefs about the use of contraceptive are contributing to the ever-increasing cases of unsafe abortion in the country.

He has therefore made a passionate appeal to the National Health Insurance Authority to include family planning services on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to motivate and increase the use of contraceptives among married as well as sexually active adults as a way of controlling population growth, spacing of children and reducing unwanted pregnancies.

Reproductive Health in East Africa: Guttmacher Institute Joins Advocates at Annual Regional Convening to Discuss How to Prevent Unsafe Abortion

MAY 11, 2021

Guttmacher Institute

Despite the liberalization of abortion laws in many Sub-Saharan African
countries in recent years and the subsequent expansion of services such as
postabortion care, unsafe abortion is still common in the region and exacts a
heavy toll on individuals, families and health systems. Sub-Saharan Africa has
the highest estimated proportion of abortions that are unsafe in the world (77%
as of 2010–2014, compared with the global average of 44%), as documented in the
2020 report From Unsafe to Safe Abortion in Sub-Saharan Africa: Slow but Steady
Progress.

In line with one of its objectives to develop
the capacity of advocates and policymakers to access and utilize evidence to
ensure that family planning and reproductive health are prioritized in national
policies and budgeting processes, the Guttmacher Institute accepted an
invitation from the East African Reproductive Health Network (EARHN) to lead a
session at its 11th annual coordination meeting.

Uganda – Spike in unplanned pregnancies, abortions

World Contraception Day takes place on September 26th every year. Under its campaign, every pregnancy is wanted. But in Uganda, this vision came under attack because of the lockdown which made access to sex easy but hard or impossible to family planning services and information. The result was an explosion of unplanned pregnancies and abortions as Agnes Kyotalengerire found out.

Monicak
Kayesu' story

When Monica Kayesu, 36, a mother of four, sought family planning
services earlier this year, she settled for an intrauterine device (IUD).  Unfortunately, the lockdown took effect at on
March 20th, the day she was to have the coil inserted. With public transport
banned, Kayesu could not get it inserted in April and conceived in May. She is
five months pregnant and cannot come to terms with the idea of having a fifth
child.

Women perform in favor of abortion before Mexican cathedral

Women perform in favor of abortion before Mexican cathedral

MEXICO CITY — A dozen women wearing green scarves lined up in front the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City’s central square on Sunday to call for legal and safe abortions throughout Mexico.

Abortion is highly restricted in the country of 120 million inhabitants, with the exception of the capital Mexico City and the southern state of Oaxaca, where the procedure is allowed up to 12 weeks of gestation.

To the sound of a metal spoon clanking against an iron frying pan, the women performed a variation of “A Rapist in Your Path” — the viral dance sequence concocted by the Chilean feminist collective La Tesis to protest violence against women. The moves are the same, but the words have changed; in this version, an “objector” stands in their path.

Unsafe abortions cause preventable deaths

As a personal principle to update myself about what is happening around the world, I visit different news portals every morning. So, it was in fulfilment of this daily ritual that on September 21, this year, I came across an article published on the Daily Post’s news portal headlined: “Nigerian women committed 2.7m abortions in 2017 – Study.”

In the article, it was reported that majority of the abortions were done by young girls in secondary schools and women in their early 20s, and that one out of every four of the abortions was unintended, leading to an increase in the abortions committed by the women.
