More than 100 protesters gathered outside the NSW Liberal Party State Council meeting, where an urgency motion to condemn legislation to decriminalise abortion in NSW was defeated.

Dozens of parents and children have chanted anti-abortion messages at MPs entering a Liberal Party State Council meeting amid tightening tensions over a move to decriminalise terminations in NSW.

In the two weeks since an historic bill removing abortion from the New South Wales criminal code passed its first hurdle in the parliament’s lower house, opponents of the legislation have fought hard to stop it becoming law.

Religious leaders, rightwing MPs and conservative media commentators have all mounted a concerted campaign to derail the legislation ahead of the vote. Opponents claim the bill will allow so-called gender or sex selection and abortion “on demand” up until birth.

A NSW upper house committee has under a week to report its findings from an inquiry examining a bill to decriminalise abortion in the state.

The parliamentary committee held hearings in Sydney on Wednesday and Thursday before the bill is sent to the Legislative Council where it's due to be debated next week.

As debate intensifies around decriminalising abortion in NSW, the state's peak medical body is accusing opponents of "unfounded fearmongering".

MPs continued to debate a bill in the lower house on Wednesday which seeks to remove abortion from the state's criminal code, instead placing it into an appropriate healthcare framework.

The Uniting Church has broken ranks with other religious institutions to throw its support behind decriminalising abortion in New South Wales.

NSW is the only Australian state or territory that has neglected to modernise abortion laws.

Last week a private member’s bill co-sponsored by 15 MPs from across the political divide was introduced to state parliament. It was expected to be debated as soon as Tuesday when parliament sits.

The architect of a historic bill to decriminalise abortion in New South Wales has hit out at opponents of the legislation, after a conservative MP wrongly claimed the bill would allow unrestricted abortion “until the moment of birth”.

The independent MP for Sydney, Alex Greenwich, tabled the bill on Thursday after it was delayed by a week by resistance within the Coalition government.

Hundreds of supporters of a bill to decriminalise abortion in NSW have descended on state parliament with many holding signs stating "Our body, our choice" and "No uterus, no opinion".

Darelle Duncan was one of those rallying on Wednesday in favour of the Reproductive Healthcare Reform Bill, which she says will give women the right to control their own lives.

The New South Wales health minister has declared it’s “time for change” when it comes to abortion law, ahead of the introduction of a new bill which would see pregnancy terminations regulated as a medical procedure around the state. Currently abortions in NSW are dealt with under the Crimes Act 1900.

The Reproductive Healthcare Reform Bill 2019, a private member’s bill, will be introduced to parliament this week by the independent MP for Sydney, Alex Greenwich.
