Handmaid’s Tales at abortion committee

Forget science fiction — the eighth amendment debates are truly dystopian

Tammy Wynette was right — sometimes it’s hard to be a woman. Ever more so, these days, when 21 parliamentarians gather in Leinster House each Wednesday to discuss abortion. It’s a topic guaranteed to elicit deeply held grievances, frustration, feelings of victimhood, accusations of prejudice and spittle-licking outrage at perceived injustices, and it does — from men.

Women are in a majority of one on the joint committee on the eighth amendment to the constitution. When its work is done, all of them ought to be awarded a medal, regardless of their personal views on abortion, for their sheer endurance and dignity. For to sit in that room with a womb — or the memory of having had one — is to be subjected to a sort of medieval torture.

Sinn Féin TDs face abortion deadline at ardfheis
SF will adopt a policy on the issue at the event – and members will be expected to toe that line

Nov 16, 2017

Sinn Féin’s political opponents often describe the party as a cult but, on one issue at least, it is just like all other parties: views among members on abortion are divided, from top to bottom.

Unlike Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, however, Sinn Féin will adopt a policy on abortion at its ardfheis this weekend, and all TDs will have to toe the party line, no matter what they personally believe.

Harris wants new abortion law published by Valentine’s Day

Ellen Coyne, Senior Ireland Reporter
November 14 2017

Simon Harris is working to have a new abortion law published by Valentine’s Day next year, The Times has learnt.

The health minister has set the deadline for his department because he believes it allows enough time for the controversial legislation to be scrutinised before a referendum in May or June. Department of Health sources confirmed Mr Harris has set Feburary 14 as the date that the work must be finished.

The National Women’s Council, the largest representative organisation for women in Ireland, will launch a campaign this week to appeal to the “middle ground” in the abortion debate.

The campaign, called “Every Woman”, will move away from the themes of choice and rights, and focus on women’s needs and the realities of their lives, according to people familiar with it.

Harris urges end to ‘tyranny of labels’ as ‘I’ve never met anyone who is not in favour of life’

The Government has to face the reality that women are having dangerous abortions and take action, Minister for Health Simon Harris has said.

He told the Fine Gael national conference that “I’ve sat in far too many rooms with women who have found this country to be cold, neglectful, lonely and isolating when they have a crisis pregnancy.”

Nov 11, 2017
Sarah Bardon

Sinn Féin is to agree an amended position on abortion at its Ard Comhairle next Saturday, allowing for terminations when a mother’s health is at risk.

The party currently advocates for a repeal of the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution and enacting legislation to allow for abortion in cases of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormality.

Thursday, November 09, 2017

Ireland is at risk of having to pay compensation to thousands of women forced to travel abroad to receive an abortion unless the law is immediately changed to make the procedure legal and easily accessible.

The US-based Centre for Reproductive Rights (CRR) made the claim after the State paid out €30,000 over an abortion case, for only the second time in its history, in response to a UN ruling on the matter.
