How will laws against abortion be enforced? Other countries offer chilling examples

In Argentina, midwives were prosecuted. In Brazil, clinics were raided. In Rwanda, hundreds of women went to jail

Within the next month it is very likely the Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate the federal constitutional right to an abortion. When that happens, dormant trigger laws in many states will immediately go into effect and abortion will become a crime. Because abortion will be regulated at the state level, enforcement and penalties will vary greatly. Kentucky, South Dakota, North Dakota, Tennessee, South Carolina and Missouri are just some of the states that would make providing an abortion a felony, with penalties including jail time up to 20 years. Other states, too impatient to wait for the court decision, have already moved to increase penalties for either having or providing an abortion. Louisiana attempted to classify abortion as a homicide, although lawmakers there have since walked back the effort. Texas is uniquely punitive, criminalizing abortion after six weeks and incentivizing enforcement through the private sector by offering bounties of $10,000 cash to deputized ordinary citizens who can sue anyone involved in providing an abortion.

Argentina Is Persecuting Abortion Rights Activists

Argentina Is Persecuting Abortion Rights Activists

Published 16 August 2018

Three police raids took place Wednesday in the small city of Rio Grande, in Argentina, against feminist activists.

The justice system of the city of Rio Grande, in the southernmost province of Tierra del Fuego, ordered the provincial police to raid the homes of feminist activists in search of evidence related to their activism for the legalization of abortion.

“It was intimidating. Members of the forensic police entered my house, read the search warrant and started going through everything. They made me go to the bathroom with a policewoman to search me, they removed my shoes and my parents’ shoes, and they took my computer, my cell phone, and my green bandanas. They also wanted to take the book that explained how to abort using pills,” Gala, a member of Colectiva Feminista (or Feminist Collective) explained.

Vulnerable women will be left to “suffer in silence and fear” following a police crackdown on the illegal purchase of abortion pills in Northern Ireland, campaigners have said.

On International Women’s Day, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) carried out a series of raids at addresses in Belfast – including the workplace of an artist involved with abortion rights campaigning – in connection with the alleged illegal purchasing of prescription medication online.

Northern Ireland: Alliance for Choice video on police crackdown on abortion pills

Alliance for Choice, March 12, 2017

ALL political parties in Northern Ireland expressed will to decriminalise women seeking abortion in the recent election period and yet the PSNI and PPS continue to pursue and prosecute people seeking abortion or people helping others to seek abortion. This has been reinforced by raids by the PSNI which have taken place over the past week, which this latest video addresses.

If you are outraged by this situation, share far and wide and contact your newly elected MLAs and your constituency MP to demand support for the vote on the Westminster bill on Monday 13th March to #trustwomen.
