The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) says unsafe abortion is an issue of public health concern and contributes significantly to maternal morbidity and mortality.
It says although the law permits the discontinuation of pregnancies under certain conditions, abortion-related stigma is deterring people, particularly, young girls, from accessing safe abortion services.

The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG), a non-governmental organization (NGO), has built the capacities of journalists on effective and objective reporting mechanisms to help curb incidences of unsafe abortion in society.
The two-day capacity development workshop, organized by the PPAG, in Tamale, brought together selected journalists from Northern and Upper West regions and was in line with the NGO’s planned efforts to help reduce unsafe abortions among the youth.

As a personal principle to update myself about what is happening around the world, I visit different news portals every morning. So, it was in fulfilment of this daily ritual that on September 21, this year, I came across an article published on the Daily Post’s news portal headlined: “Nigerian women committed 2.7m abortions in 2017 – Study.”
In the article, it was reported that majority of the abortions were done by young girls in secondary schools and women in their early 20s, and that one out of every four of the abortions was unintended, leading to an increase in the abortions committed by the women.

‘Stigmatisation causes women to seek unsafe abortion services’

Women with unwanted pregnancy who intend to access safe abortion services in Ghana suffer stigmatization and that deters them from seeking such services. They, therefore, resort to unsafe abortion, which can lead to complications such as severe infections, infertility and even death.
The Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG), Mrs Abena Adubea Amoah Acheampong, who made the observation, however, pointed out that the law allowed for safe abortion by a registered professional at a registered facility if the pregnancy had the tendency to affect the woman physically, psychologically or financially.
Journalists Sensitized On Reproductive Health

Selorm Azumah, Senior Advisor at Ipas Ghana, a global non-governmental organisation dedicated to ending preventable deaths and disabilities from unsafe abortion, has called for the implementation of the comprehensive reproductive health education (CRHE) in the country.
According to him, Ghana could greatly reduce the incidence of unsafe abortion and its related complications if citizens, especially girls and women, are equipped with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values they need to determine and enjoy sexuality physically and emotionally as individuals and in relationships.

Teach Your Children Safe Sex…Prevent Unsafe Abortion - Azumah

Senior Advisor at Ipas Ghana, Selorm Azumah has asked Ghanaians not to allow their values and religious beliefs to ‘blind’ them as far as practicing safe sex is concerned.
According to him, so many girls of reproductive age are dying of unsafe abortion because parents, society and the church are refusing to educate their children on safe sex or the use of contraceptives.

Queenmothers Stand Against Illegal Abortion

The queens from across the 18 municipalities and districts in the region have been organizing durbars and meetings in the communities to educate the people, particularly teenage girls on reproductive health.
This is being done in partnership with Ipas Ghana and the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG).
