Abortion decriminalized in Sydney after Australian lawmakers overturn 119-year-old law

(CNN)Abortion has now been decriminalized in almost all of Australia after the country's most populous state voted to overturn a 119-year-old law.

On Thursday, lawmakers in New South Wales -- which is home to Sydney -- voted to pass a bill that decriminalizes abortion and makes terminations available to people who are less than 22 weeks pregnant.

NSW parliament has passed laws decriminalising abortion, more than a century after it was included in the state’s criminal code — but the state’s premier was nowhere to be seen in the chamber this morning.

Overnight, the NSW Upper House finally passed the bill and this morning the Lower House approved its amendments.

NSW will become the final state in the country to remove abortion from the Crimes Act after the contentious bill passed its last hurdle on Thursday morning.

The amended bill appeased conservative MPs, securing Premier Gladys Berejiklian's majority which was under threat after rebel MPs warned they could defect.

Anonymously authored anti-abortion leaflets in Canberra have targeted Scott Morrison for remaining “silent” while states including New South Wales have pushed to decriminalise abortion.

The flyer – which is not authorised but is marked as from the End Violence Against Unborn Babies Coalition – is almost identical to one targeting the Berejiklian government with inflammatory rhetoric comparing abortion to murder in Nazi concentration camps.

The Young Liberals' have overwhelming backed Gladys Berejiklian's handling of the abortion bill, moving a motion in support of the Premier at their annual convention on the weekend.

After the Premier stared down a spill threat from three disgruntled conservative MPs last week, the youth wing moved a motion supporting her decision to allow a conscience vote on abortion.

Debate has continued into the night on proposed amendments to the controversial bill to decriminalise abortion in NSW.

The upper house began debating amendments to the bill on Tuesday afternoon following the threat of a leadership spill against Premier Gladys Berejiklian over her handling of the private member's bill.

In its current form, the Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill 2019 would allow terminations up to 22 weeks as well as later abortions if two doctors agree.

Sheffield, England: Premier Gladys Berejiklian has made an extraordinary appeal to her upper house colleagues to consider "strengthening" the abortion bill as she comes under pressure from conservative MPs.

Ms Berejiklian said she would be prepared to change the Crimes Act to ban gender selection abortions and encouraged upper house MPs to give the issue "careful consideration".
