Opposition parties say women’s rights dealt blow after package approved by Georgia Meloni’s cabinet

Italian opposition parties have said women’s rights in Italy have been dealt a “heavy” blow after parliament passed a measure by Giorgia Meloni’s far-right government allowing anti-abortion activists to enter abortion consultation clinics.

The measure forms part of a package of initiatives approved by Meloni’s cabinet that will be funded by the EU’s post-pandemic recovery fund, of which Italy is the biggest beneficiary, and was put to the lower house in a confidence vote on Tuesday. The package of measures is expected to comfortably pass in the senate, too.

In January, the regional councilor Marco Grimaldi presented a question that proposes to address a very delicate issue for Piedmont (and more generally for Italy), namely that of objecting doctors and the difficulties that more and more women encounter when they decide to have an abortion .

The situation is well exemplified by the Ciriè hospital, a town a few kilometers from Turin, where nine out of nine gynecologists are conscientious objectors and, consequently, the right to abortion is systematically denied.

Romanian medical student Bianca was in South Korea in March this year when she discovered she was pregnant.

At the time she was taking part in a short work placement in Daegu in the south-east of the country, and was soon to return to Germany to resume her Erasmus programme.

“The news freaked me out,” she told The Black Sea. “I knew a baby would complicate my career and I was not ready for it.”
