The government has threatened to close down Marie Stopes clinics if they are found to be conducting abortions — whether at the request of a patient or as permitted by the law.

This move is defeatist as tens of women each day will continue seeking abortion services, whether Marie Stopes is closed down or not.

In a dark, nondescript room, the walls caked in spots and smears whose origins she would rather not think about, a young girl sits wringing her hands, waiting for the woman she had been told could help her. She takes one deep breath after another, telling herself it will be okay, there is no other option, she has to be there.

Eventually the door slowly starts to open, bathing the room in light that does nothing other than illuminate the dilapidated hospital bed in the corner.

Atheists in Kenya (AIK) have faulted the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB) for banning abortions at Marie Stopes.

The group has further termed the ban on abortion as misguided and regrettable, insisting that abortion is common in the country.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB) has ordered reproductive services provider Marie Stopes to stop offering any form of abortion services.

In what signals an end to the organisation’s positioning as the go-to facility for women with unwanted pregnancies, Marie Stopes has further been ordered to pull down advertisements that are deemed to be against the rules of medical advertising from its website and other mediums.

Marie Stopes, a renown reproductive health clinic, has been ordered to stop offering abortion services of any kind.

The government through the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB) has also directed the clinic to submit weekly returns to the board over the next 60 days.

It is illegal to offer abortion services in Kenya unless the health of the mother is at risk.

Kenyan authorities have prohibited the international health organisation Marie Stopes from offering any form of abortion services.

The Medical Practitioners Board made the decision after investigating complaints that the group’s adverts were encouraging abortion.
