Taoiseach’s confirms State-funded hospitals must provide abortion services

June 12, 2018
Marie O'Halloran

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has hit out at socialist parties and groups in the Dáil, accusing them of wanting to “turn religious people into pariahs”.

He made the claim as he confirmed that all publicly funded hospitals will be required to provide abortion services once legislation is enacted in the Oireachtas.

Solidarity TD Mick Barry asked would abortion services be provided by the new national maternity hospital to be built in the grounds of St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin, “a campus controlled by a company with a board dedicated to a Catholic ethos”.

Harry McGee: Smiling Savita portraits proclaiming a new reality for Ireland
May 26, 2018

Harry McGee Political Correspondent

In the last few days of the referendum campaign on the Eight Amendment dozens of small posters appeared around Dublin.

The image was of Savita Halappanavar, instantly recognisable from her thick dark hair, wide smile, smiling eyes, and the Bindi dot on the forehead. The message contained one word: Yes. They were striking in their simplicity and directness.

The Savita case (read Kitty Holland’s report from 2012 here) was never too far away from people’s minds during the eight weeks that this extraordinary referendum campaign seeped into Irish public consciousness on doorsteps, in the streets, in the media, or on the airwaves… right up to polling day.

In the run-up to the referendum on whether to retain or repeal the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution, on May 25th, The Irish Times has asked readers to share their personal experiences of abortion, which the amendment bans in almost all circumstances. This is one of the accounts we received. To submit yours, click here.

In January 2014 my husband and I sat waiting in the departure lounge to board our flight to Liverpool at 7am. I was extremely unwell; I had pains going down the entire left side of my body and across my stomach.

Repeal of the Eighth ‘will constitute consent’ for liberal abortion regime

Save the 8th tells ‘Irish Times’ podcast most voters unaware of Yes vote implications

April 18, 2018
Sarah Bardon

Repealing the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution will constitute consent for Ireland to have a “liberal abortion regime”, the Save the 8th campaign has said.

Speaking on The Irish Times’s Inside Politics podcast, the campaign’s communications director, John McGuirk, said many people were unaware of the implications of a vote for repeal. Most voters believed they were supporting legislation allowing for abortions in cases of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormalities, not terminations of “healthy babies of healthy mothers up to 12 weeks and beyond”, he claimed.

A referendum on repealing Article 40.3.3, also known as the Eighth Amendment, is to take place on May 25th. The Amendment gives an equal right to life to the mother and the unborn.
