Abortion is a topic that has been very sensitive over the years. When people are asked about their opinion, they throw the ‘abortion is a crime’ statement with no further room for debate.

Dozens of women access abortion and post-abortion services yearly whether safe or unsafe. Abortion is protected by the constitution under Article 26 (4).

Globally there are 214 million women with an unmet need for contraception. The unmet need for family planning remains high in Kenya with about one in four married women not able to access contraceptives.

Only three in every 10 adolescents and young women are using a modern contraceptive method.

International Safe Abortion Day: Why Kenya needs clarity on safe abortion guidelines

This weekend, the world will be marking the International Safe Abortion Day, on 28th September. This comes in the wake of the recent High Court ruling to reinstate the 2012 Standards and Guidelines for Reducing Morbidity and Mortality from Unsafe Abortion in Kenya.

While many reproductive health advocates have lauded the court’s decision as a win for women, many Kenyans are still in the dark regarding what the document actually says.
