Women seeking abortions in regional Queensland after often marginalised and can face month-long waiting lists for an often unaffordable procedure that should be considered “essential healthcare”, a Brisbane-based abortion provider says.

Kalama Emanuel considers herself a “fly-in-fly-out worker” providing terminations to women in Rockhampton once a fortnight, where she said the wait-list can stretch to four weeks.

One in two Queenslanders would change their vote in the upcoming election if their candidate backed keeping abortion a criminal offence, according to new polling.

Community group Fair Agenda, which has been working to make abortion a key issue during the state election, revealed figures on Monday showing 50 percent of voters would be unwilling to vote for their preferred candidate if that candidate wanted accessing abortion to remain a criminal offence.

A Queensland woman who applied for special consent to terminate her high-risk twin pregnancy has been denied an abortion because a tribunal ruled she did "not have the capacity to make complex decisions about all of her personal matters due to her diagnosed mental illness".

The pregnant 33-year-old was jailed at the Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre in June for breaching bail conditions involving drug use. She has since been living at a mental health facility where she is receiving treatment for schizophrenia.

A debate to decriminalise abortion in Queensland has been cancelled and the issue postponed until at least the next term of parliament, after LNP MPs indicated they would not support the proposal.

Independent MP Rob Pyne has withdrawn his two bills, which were scheduled for debate tomorrow night.

Instead, the existing laws will be referred to the Queensland Law Reform Commission (QLRC) to provide advice that the Labor Government has pledged to enact if it is re-elected.

Australia: Case closed: experts loudly back decriminalisation of abortion in Qld

Doctors’ professional bodies have spoken out loud and clear in favour of the decriminalisation of abortion in Queensland, write Caroline de Costa, professor of gynaecology, and Heather Douglas, professor of criminal law.

The report of the bipartisan committee of Queensland Parliament inquiring into abortion law reform in the statewas released at 5.17pm last Friday. The Health, Communities, Disability Services and Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Committee was instructed to conduct an inquiry following the tabling of the Abortion Law Reform (Woman’s Right to Choose) Amendment Bill on May 9 by independent MP for Cairns Rob Pyne.

Pyne’s bill is the first attempt in history to remove the abortion offences from the Queensland Criminal Code (QCC) of 1899. These offences makes abortion a crime for doctors, women and any person assisting with an abortion procedure.
