Many states have created new laws this year to limit abortion or even try to ban it altogether in the hope that the Supreme Court with President Trump’s two appointees will be more likely to approve them.

Most of the new restrictions are in the South and Midwest. In contrast, New York removed old restrictions and affirmed access to abortion. Vermont is weighing a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights.

Women in England and Wales have had the right to seek an abortion since 1968, but more than 50 years on, many women around the world do not have the same choice.

A 2017 report by the Guttmacher Institute, which studies reproductive health laws, found that 42% of women of reproductive age live in countries where abortion is either banned or only allowed in specific circumstances.

The Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), has called for the liberalization of restrictive abortion laws in Nigeria to enable women access appropriate healthcare.

President of the Society, Prof Oluwarotimi Akinola, who addressed reporters in Calabar after their 52nd Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference, said evidence all over the world has shown that the number of abortions do not increase due to the liberalization of the law.

Warsaw, Poland - Women on Waves and the Sisterhood Network teamed up to fight attempts to further restrict abortion rights in Poland. A case bough by the group of Members of the Lower Chamber of The Parliament (Sejm) to the Constitutional Tribunal argues that the current Polish abortion law which allows for a legal abortion in the case of severe fetal malformation, violates the Polish constitutional protection of the life of everyone (incl. fetuses) under the case reference K 13/17.

Women on Waves, a Dutch non-profit organisation and the Sisterhood Network, an informal support group from Stockholm, Sweden are both supporting women’s right to reproductive freedom by providing access to reproductive healthcare including abortion. Both organizations deal with hundreds of women every month who were denied their right to terminate a pregnancy due to severe fetal anomalies or pregnancy threatening their health or life.

The newly conservative-majority Supreme Court could put abortion rights further in jeopardy, according to the authors of a new study in the journal Sexuality Research and Social Policy.

Researchers Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH), a reproductive health research group based at the University of California, San Francisco, compared abortion laws in Louisiana and Maryland and found state restrictions have a larger effect on women than initially thought.

Even in cases of rape or when their lives are in danger, women in the country of 85,500 people nestled in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain, have no right to an abortion.

A CROWD gathers around the dumpster and many are busy taking videos of the lifeless body of a new born baby. The horrible sight is made worse by the garbage and filth that surrounds the tiny pink mass covered in blood. Its tiny hands are balled into fists, most probably he/she gave a good fight before the cold got the better of its underdeveloped lungs.

Many are upset with the “monster mother” who just threw away her newborn and walked away as if all was in order.

Baby dumping or foetuses clogging sewer pipe is not new in this country neither have we seen the last of it. This social scourge is an indication of bigger problems of sexual reproductive health (SRH), particularly termination of pregnancy or abortion.

Anthony Kennedy, the longest-serving member of the Supreme Court, is retiring.

Within minutes of his announcement, CNN senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin tweeted this: “Anthony Kennedy is retiring. Abortion will be illegal in twenty states in 18 months. #SCOTUS.”

Nothing is guaranteed, of course, but Kennedy has, since at least 2005, been the swing vote on many of the Court’s most ideologically charged decisions — including preserving Roe v. Wade.

Last week, when 66.4 percent of Irish voters stunned the world by voting to end the country’s ban on abortion, it gave many hope that countries in Latin America and the Caribbean—which have some of the world’s most restrictive abortion laws—would join the global trend towards easing abortion restrictions.

Just last year Chile ended its longstanding total abortion ban, allowing the procedure if the life of the pregnant woman is at risk, if the pregnancy is the result of rape, or if the fetus will not survive outside the womb.
