An abortion at the age of 23 gave me freedom
During the Irish referendum, there was a lot of talk about abortion in extreme cases, but some – like mine – are banal but necessary

When I was 23, my life forked. Until then, it had felt like one of those LA freeways with half a dozen lanes: I had options in terms of which path I took, but they were all going in the same general direction.

I was barely making a living in a job I enjoyed, and living in a dump with friends I adored. Life was wide open. Then one day I took a pregnancy test and suddenly there were two directions for me: have the baby or don’t. I cried on the bathroom floor with my best friend, but the tears were out of embarrassment that I had been so careless. They weren’t out of fear. It was years before I appreciated what a privilege that was.

Fintan O’Toole: 8th Amendment demands punishment for women
Constitutional ban means Ireland too extreme even for mainstream social conservatives

Fintan O'Toole

I’m not sure people who want to defend the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution know how extreme their position is. Extreme, that is to say, not by the standards of those of us who always opposed it and would like it to be repealed, but even by the standards of mainstream social conservatism.

The Eighth is, in one crucial respect, on the lunatic fringe of anti-abortion activism. This is because, as has been made clear in recent years, it does not merely outlaw abortion in all but a very small range of circumstances. It does something else, something that most sensible conservatives regard as repugnant – it demands severe punishment for women who have abortions. There is no way around this: while the Eighth is in place, Ireland is committed to treating abortion, not just as a moral wrong, but as a crime more serious than, for example, child rape.

The Only Honest Right Wing Pundit Is a Violent One

Personally, I am glad that female staffers who have had abortions at the Atlantic will not have to sit next to a man who wants them dead. But philosophically, the recent firing of Kevin D. Williamson says more about liberals’ inability to face the truth about their own country than one man’s lack of empathy for women.

Amid uproar over the announcement that Williamson had been hired as the Atlantic’s new staff writer, editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg wrote in a memo that his publication should be a “big tent for ideas and argument” and “ideologically diverse...We have to host people who actually disagree with, and sometimes offend, the other side.” But then Goldberg was faced with that pesky 2014 podcast, dug up by Media Matters, that made it hard to dismiss his new employee’s ideology as just an “objectionable tweet.” Like those tweets, Williamson’s podcast argument took anti-abortion talking points out of theoretical debate-land and instead to their tangible, logical conclusion.
