Saoirse Ronan and fellow Irish actors stand in powerful video to repeal the eight amendment

Saoirse Ronan, Cillian Murphy, Andrew Scott and Liam Cunningham are among a list of top Irish actors who are showing their support behind the ‘Together For Yes’ campaign in a brand new video published on the campaign's social media channels this evening.

The powerful and chilling video lists the variety of ways in which women are currently affected by the 8th Amendment in this country and calls for this to change, saying: “For women’s safety, for a just society, for a fairer Ireland”.

Abortion is "already here" but needs to be made safe, the chair of the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Dr Peter Boylan, has said.

Launching the Together For Yes national campaign in Athlone yesterday, Dr Boylan described the Eighth Amendment as "a failed experiment".

As campaigning on both sides of Ireland’s abortion debate intensifies ahead of the May referendum, artists in Limerick are taking to the streets

On the road to Limerick from the airport, you can see two huge billboards funded by a Christian lobby group. One shows a foetus at 11 weeks’ gestation with the words “one of us”. Another shows a man saying he would never forget what he saw while working in an operating theatre where abortions were taking place (though the poster implies he was a nurse, the hospital revealed he was a porter). It is six weeks until the referendum in Ireland on whether the eighth amendment to the constitution – which essentially gave a foetus the same rights as the woman carrying it – should be repealed, and the campaigning on both sides is intensifying.
