Low-cost surgical abortion provider announced for Tasmania

A low-cost surgical termination provider will open in Hobart from the end of November, but there are concerns over the price of the procedure and accessibility for regional women.

The State Government has revealed the provider, named as Melbourne-based Hampton Park Women's Health Care, will begin taking referrals from Monday.

Tasmanian women remain without access to low-cost surgical abortions almost a year after the state's only dedicated private clinic closed.

The state Liberal government pledged to open a new low-cost abortion service by the end of October but stalled negotiations between the provider and property owner have pushed the date back.

Tasmania's Premier has been unable to guarantee that women will have access to a new low-cost surgical abortion provider by the end of the year, despite the Government previously announcing the service would open in October.

It has been almost a year since the state's only dedicated low-cost surgical abortion clinic closed, citing a drop in demand for services.

Pressure is mounting on the State Government to improve access to surgical abortions in Tasmania, with about 200 people rallying in Hobart on Saturday to call for change.

Among the women who tearfully shared personal experiences with pregnancy termination at the Not Ovary-Acting rally on Parliament lawns was Hobart alderman Helen Burnet.
