Last week, the Solapur police had arrested Tejas Gandhi, 43, and his wife Priti, 41, who ran the Siya Maternity and Surgical Home in Akluj for allegedly conducting sex determination and gender-selective abortions.
Investigations in the Solapur female foeticide case have now revealed that government servants and candidates wanting to contest the local body elections may have used the services of the arrested doctor couple at Akluj to abort their unborn children. Government servants can avail of dependent benefits for only up to two children. For those who want to contest polls or have been elected to institutions like gram panchayats, panchayat samitis, zilla parishads and municipal bodies, the nominations and elections of those with over two children are liable to be set aside.

Cops' sting unearths doc's abortion racket

KURAVI (MAHBUBABAD): The state government drive to encourage women to deliver babies at government hospitals resulted in the discovery of a long-running illegal sex-determination tests and abortion racket here.
According to inspector of Special Branch of police R Santosh, Dr R Srinivas of Swetha Nursing Home in the mandal headquarters here is suspected to have conducted nearly 300 illegal abortions of female foetuses in the last five months. The police said they suspect that he has been conducting such operations since 2013.

PM Modi looks into botched up abortion

New Delhi: The recent incident of a 26-year-old woman dying during a botched up termination of pregnancy has caught the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The PM has sought a report from the Centre on the matter, with a mandate to the Union health ministry to strengthen the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act and Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act.
The police in March had arrested a homeopath, Dr Babasaheb Khidrapure, who ran an illicit abortion racket in the Mhaisal village, Maharashtra, after the discovery of as many as 19 aborted female foetuses dumped in a sewer.

Arrest of medical representative from Mumbai reveals an inter-state abortion pills racket
The tentacles of the Sangli abortion racket have spread all the way to the national capital. Police investigating the illegal abortion racket in Mhaisal village in Sangli have discovered an inter-state abortion pills racket.
Investigations have revealed the presence of a widespread distribution of abortion pills with its roots in Delhi. From there, the drugs come to Mumbai, from where it goes to Sangli and other parts of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra: 19 Foetuses Found in Sangli District in Suspected Abortion Racket

Mumbai: On Tuesday, March 6, the police arrested a doctor couple, who were on the run, in connection to the 19 foetuses found dumped near a stream in a village in Sangli district of Maharashtra.
The Sangli police on March 5 found 19 foetuses dumped near a stream at Mhaisal village in Miraj block in Sangli. The foetuses were wrapped in plastic bags and were either in the process of decomposition or remains of flesh and bones.
The police came across this racket of illegal abortions while probing the death of a woman during an abortion at the private hospital of Dr Babasaheb Khidrapure, a homeopath. The foetuses have been sent to the government hospital in Miraj to determine if the foetuses are male or female.

Ingenuity is often the hallmark of cheats. In Rajasthan, unscrupulous medical practitioners, looking to make a quick buck, have gone a step further by duping pregnant women to undergo abortions after telling them that they are carrying a girl child despite the foetus being a male.
“It is perhaps the mother of all frauds,” points out Naveen Jain, head of Rajasthan’s Pre-Conception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (PC-PNDT) bureau of investigation, and mission director of National Health Mission.
Though sex determination is illegal, the practice is rampant is Rajasthan where a male child is still preferred over a girl by many would-be parents. In a state notorious for its skewed child sex ratio — 888 girls for every 1,000 boys as against the national average of 919, as per the 2011 census — some make a quick buck by offering medical termination services in seedy clinics.

Academics often talk about between 30 and 60 million “missing girls” in China, apparently killed in the womb or just after birth, thanks to a combination of preference for sons and the country’s decades under a repressive one-child policy.
Now researchers in the United States and China think they might have found many — or even most — of them, and argue they might not have been killed after all.
