MUGU: A demand has been made for a separate sexual and reproductive health education curriculum.

The participants of a discussion session on ‘safe abortion’ organized by CDS-Park, Mugu here on Friday voiced for the same which, as they said, was urgently needed for broader sex education essential to pursue a decent and healthy life.

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed the Sindh Reproductive Healthcare Rights Bill aimed at promoting the reproductive healthcare rights of men and women and taking care of complications with regard to pregnancy and childbirth.

The bill was originally handed to the standing committee on health a month earlier, which returned it to the house after necessary tweaking.

This year, the World Health Assembly was made a stage for the United States to display its regressive agenda on women’s sexual and reproductive health rights. Not so long ago, in April, the country had already exercised its power in the United Nations Security Council on the same topic. Pressure from the Trump administration has removed references to sexual health from a resolution against sexual violence during conflict. The original resolution, proposed by Germany, said that women who had been raped needed access to safe abortions, as well as reproductive and sexual healthcare. But the document approved by the Security Council by a vote of 13-0, with Russia and China abstaining, had all language relating to “sexual and reproductive health” rights removed.

A study conducted by a New York-based Population Council has noted, that Pakistan has one of the world’s highest levels of abortion.

This study occurred as part of a nonprofit organisation that advocates family planning and as such they did a deep dive to investigate the global levels of abortion.

Atebubu (B/A), Feb 21, GNA – The campaign to substantially reduce unsafe abortion, particularly among young women in the Brong-Ahafo Region, has intensified.

This is being spearheaded by Global Hands on Natural Environmental Care (GHANECare), a non-profit organization - working to promote women, children and youth rights to basic social services, with support from Mennion Daniel’s Limited – a multilateral funding agency.
