With the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, the future of Roe v. Wade is looking increasingly grim.

But even while the landmark law remains in place, the rollback of abortion access across the US is already well underway — and women who want to safely terminate their pregnancies face an increasing number of roadblocks.

If you have to travel 100 miles to terminate your pregnancy, ordering abortion pills online might be a more practical option for you. But while it’s relatively easy to purchase medication abortion on the internet, websites can feel sketchy or confusing as they don’t always provide the relevant information or instructions.

Dutch physician Rebecca Gomperts has addressed this problem, launching a new service called Aid Access that mails abortion pills to people living in the United States.

There’s Now an Online Option for Self-Managed Early Abortion Care in the United States

There’s Now an Online Option for Self-Managed Early Abortion Care in the United States
Self-managed abortion is not new, but is vilified by right-wing and religious groups opposed to abortion rights as akin to the dangerous back-alley option.

A new online service, Aid Access, offers women an option to buy early abortion pills online and receive both medical consultation and physician-supported medical care at a critical time for reproductive health.

Abortion care advocates say Aid Access’ services—which are now available in the United States after being available for a decade in other countries—normalizes self-managed care and provides a safe, confidential, medically-supported alternative to clinic-based care for early abortion.

Self-Managed Abortion Care Becomes Urgent as Threats to Roe v. Wade Mount

When President Trump took office just over a year and a half ago, activists could only make educated guesses about whether his promised onslaught against reproductive health care would truly come to pass. The current picture is worse than expected due to attacks from rogue agency heads throughout the Trump-Pence administration who are collaborating to deny access to care to people across the country.

These agency heads include Betsy Devos at the Department of Education, who is working in tandem with the new division of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Civil Rights to reduce access to contraception; Scott Lloyd, who has directed the Office of Refugee Resettlement to deny abortion care to immigrant minors; and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has announced a “religious liberty task force” to shore up already existing “conscience clauses” allowing employees to refuse care.

Abortion-rights advocates are intensifying efforts to make it easier for women to get abortions amid a new wave of state-level bans and restrictions expected to occur under a reconfigured U.S. Supreme Court.

The efforts include boosting financial aid for women needing to travel long distances to get an abortion, and raising awareness about the option of do-it-yourself abortions.

In Some States, You Can Still Be Criminally Prosecuted for Ending Your Own Pregnancy
And Jill Adams is determined to change that.

Justice Anthony Kennedy’s announcement of his impending retirement in June immediately changed the conversation surrounding reproductive justice. The question of "if Roe is reversed" has turned to "when Roe is reversed." People are scared — and rightfully so — about what options they will have once the protections of Roe are gone.

But even before Trump was elected and began appointing ultra-conservative Supreme Court justices, the Self Induced Abortion (SIA) Legal Team was doing work to increase protections for self-managed abortion. The lawyer-led organization was formed in response to the criminalization of people who end their own pregnancies.

The nomination of Brett Kavanaugh – Donald Trump’s conservative, pro-life pick for the Supreme Court – has set off a wave of activism among women’s rights advocates seeking to protect abortion rights across the US.

Groups like Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America have staged protests and phone drives in an attempt block Mr Kavanaugh’s nomination, warning of a return to the days before Roe v Wade – the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalised abortion.

What to expect when you’re expecting your abortifacient pill delivery

With the prospect of a more conservative Supreme Court on the horizon, some progressive women have begun to fear what will happen if Roe v. Wade, the case that legalized abortion, is overturned. Some of these prophecies have centered on a popular meme in the pro-choice community: The coat hanger.

During a recent rally, New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon held up a wire coat hanger as a warning that we should not return to the previous generation’s means of obtaining illicit abortions. And Representative Lois Frankel, a Democrat from Florida, banged a coat hanger on the table at a briefing while discussing the latest Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.

At its latest meeting, the Massachusetts Medical Society took a new stand: Women who attempt to end a pregnancy on their own should not be considered criminals.

Self-induced abortion is explicitly banned in seven states, and more have laws on the books that could be used to prosecute women for self-induction, according to a recent report.

US: SIA In Our Communities: A Conversation

SIA In Our Communities: A Conversation
Dec 7, 2017

SIA In Our Communities: A Conversation was a community-engaged research project involving people who work with populations likely to be targeted by law enforcement for ending pregnancies outside the formal healthcare system. Reproductive justice activists, community-based abortion providers, and other advocates who center potentially impacted communities in their work came together to explore the cultural origins of, growing need for, and legal risks associated with supported and self-induced abortion ("SIA") in non-clinical settings. This report captures the hopes, concerns, and recommendations for the RHRJ movement(s) from the critical perspectives of some of the communities that have the most to gain or to lose through advocacy efforts to decriminalize and normalize non-clinical abortion.
