Latest: Taoiseach 'hiding truth about abortion proposal', says Love Both campaign

The Love Both campaign has today accused Taoiseach Leo Varadkar of keeping the public in the dark about what repeal of the Eighth Amendment would mean.

This weekend, the Taoiseach claimed that if the referendum passed, it "does not mean there will be no restrictions".

The German parliament is split over a Nazi-era abortion law that punishes doctors

One of the first orders of business for the freshly-formed government in Berlin next week was meant to be a vote on striking a law introduced by the Nazis in the 1930s, making it illegal for doctors to publicly say that they offer abortion services or abortion advice.

In a country as progressive as Germany, it may surprise some people to know that under section 219a of the criminal code, a medical professional is forbidden to publicly “offer, announce, or advertise” abortion services. Breaking the law is punishable with a fine or up to two years in prison.

Thousands of people took part in the March for Choice in Dublin in September, a protest that was filled with banners of all types, but mostly from parties of the declared left.

Solidarity and People Before Profit were prominent. So, too, were the Labour Party, the Greens and the Social Democrats. However, the complete absence of leading Sinn Féin personalities, or, indeed, the party’s banners was striking.
