Lessons for Ireland from the Pro-Choice movement in Italy

Lessons for Ireland from the Pro-Choice movement in Italy
Date: Mon, 2017-09-25

I moved to Ireland from Italy shortly after the Strike4Repeal of the 8th of March, a mass mobilisation on the streets of Dublin in protest of Ireland’s archaic abortion laws, which I followed closely on social media. While still in Italy, I had been involved in organising a successful feminist demonstration in the city where I lived, on that same date (International Women’s Day), and I felt deep sympathy and admiration for the Irish pro-choice activists and the amazing work they were carrying out. At first glance it was unbelievable to me that in a western-European country people still had to take the streets to demand access to abortion. While the Irish situation initially felt like something I could not relate to, I soon remembered where I was from and I had to think twice: despite abortion being legal in my home country, safe and effective access to abortion service is currently utopia.

Thousands of women have gone on strike in towns and cities across Northern Ireland and the Republic to protest the countries' abortion bans, as part of a day of action organised to coincide with International Women's Day.

Women wore all black and were encouraged to take the day off work as well as refraining from performing emotional labour, unpaid gendered expectations placed on women.

DUBLIN – Thousands of people marched through Ireland’s capital on Wednesday evening to demand the government repeals its highly restrictive abortion laws.

The “March4Repeal” was the culmination of a series of actions planned for International Women’s Day to protest against the eighth amendment of the Irish constitution, which states that abortion is prohibited except for when a pregnant woman’s life is seen to be at immediate risk.

A bus is being driven around Ireland to help women have abortions

A group of women are driving a bus around Ireland to help distribute abortion pills.

Under the eighth amendment of Ireland’s constitution, abortion is only legal if a woman’s life is in immediate danger. And using pills to induce miscarriages early in pregnancies is also against the law, as it is in Northern Ireland. Some estimates say 12 women travel to the UK a day for abortions, while three Irish women are said to buy abortion pills online every day.

But campaigners from ROSA (Reproductive rights against Oppression, Sexism and Austerity), are travelling across Ireland to fight for a referendum to repeal the eighth amendment.

IRELAND – A group of women are driving around Ireland to advocate for abortion rights, as many continue to oppose the country’s highly restrictive laws against the procedure.

The eighth amendment of the constitution of Ireland states the right to life of the unborn is equal to that of the woman, meaning that abortion is illegal unless a woman’s life is seen to be in immediate danger.

ROSA (Reproductive rights against Oppression, Sexism, and Austerity) will drive the “Bus4Repeal” between Dublin, Cork, and Galway between 6 and 8 March as part of ongoing campaigns for a referendum to repeal the eighth amendment.
