Tasmania still without a low-cost abortion facility as Premier is challenged on 'see your GP' advice

Tasmania's Premier has been unable to guarantee that women will have access to a new low-cost surgical abortion provider by the end of the year, despite the Government previously announcing the service would open in October.

It has been almost a year since the state's only dedicated low-cost surgical abortion clinic closed, citing a drop in demand for services.

A former staffer to Tasmanian premier Will Hodgman spent weeks trying to access a termination before spending $4,500 to have the procedure interstate, a week after the premier promised his state that abortion was accessible.

Bianca* spoke to BuzzFeed News this week about how she spent thousands of dollars going from GP to hospital to private provider to try to access the procedure before ultimately catching a plane to Melbourne for the surgery.
