For women in rural and regional Australia, accessing abortion services can be costly and a logistical nightmare, requiring hours of travel to reach a clinic.

Now, a new "tele-abortion" service aims to change that. Abortion Online, launched this week, provides medical termination consultations online or over the phone, removing the need to travel to an abortion clinic in person.

Over the past thirteen years, many Australian women have used the drug mifepristone (RU486) to bring about a medical abortion.

Rather than undergoing a surgical abortion in a clinic or hospital operating theatre, a medical abortion is induced by taking drugs prescribed by a doctor.

A national postal abortion service has shut down after almost four years, leaving women across the country with fewer options to terminate a pregnancy using abortion drugs RU486.

The Tabbot Foundation was founded in Sept. 2015 by Dr Paul Hyland, who said his service had provided medical terminations to around 6,000 Australian women living "as far east as Lord Howe Island and as far west as Rottnest Island".

Renata lives in Inverell, a “small country town” in rural New South Wales where “everyone knows everyone”.

In 2009 she fell pregnant unexpectedly.

“We had only been together for about seven weeks and things were already going south in the relationship at that point,” Renata, who asked for us not to use her real name for privacy reasons, told BuzzFeed News.

“I was 19-years-old and I was really scared about going to my family GP because I thought it would get back to my parents.

Access to medical abortion pills is limited in Australia by the fact that relatively few general practitioners (GPs) offer the service, and some young women, particularly in rural areas, are still not even aware they may use the pills instead of having a surgical abortion.
