Please, Talk to Your Kids About Abortion

My oldest son has always shown an aptitude for math and science. (I blame his father.) He’s fascinated by the human body, too. At the tender age of 4 (he’s now 7 years old), my partner and I bought him a book detailing the ins and outs of human anatomy, and he’d more often than not fall asleep with it across his chest, open to some page on the cardiovascular system. He uses the correct terminology for both a penis and a vagina, understands that sex can result in a pregnancy, and, to the surprise of many, what abortion is — and that his mom has had one.

How will you explain the abortion referendum to your children? The short answer is, I’d hoped not to. As with the other big ticket news items, I had expected the savage servility of the world to slide on by. Naivety, it seems, is not the sole preserve of the young.

An impending Referendum on Repealing the 8th Amendment of the Constitution brings with it posters and campaigners and questions, so many questions. For us, it begins when the nine-year-old’s friend attends a march in town. The concept of “Pro-choice” has come to Fourth Class. Not a moment too soon, some might say; our girls must be ‘woke’ on abortion while their Christmas presents still come from Santa.

Psychotherapist Stella O’Malley feels that Irish parents of children under-12 should feel comfortable to discuss the abortion referendum with their children on some level.

Ms O’Malley, author “Cotton Wool Kids”, says most of all, the time leading up to the abortion referendum on May 25, is an opportunity for Irish parents to help their children foster their critical thinking.
