SAN SALVADOR (Reuters) - An El Salvadoran woman, serving a 30-year prison term for allegedly aborting her child, was freed on Thursday after the country's Supreme Court reduced her sentence.

Since 1997, El Salvador has had one of the world's most severe laws against women who have had abortions or those who are suspected of assisting others with abortions.

Prosecutors maintain that Teodora Vasquez, a 34-year-old chef, strangled her baby after it was born in 2007. Her lawyers said she had health complications and had suffered a stillbirth.

MEXICO CITY — A Salvadoran woman who spent almost 11 years in prison under El Salvador’s ban on abortion was freed Thursday after the country’s Supreme Court commuted her sentence.

The case of the woman, Teodora del Carmen Vásquez, underscores the punishment faced by Salvadoran women convicted of homicide after losing a pregnancy. El Salvador forbids abortion under any circumstances, even to save the life of the mother.

A woman who has an abortion or a miscarriage can face up to 50 years in prison if she is charged with aggravated homicide.

Salvadoran citizen Teodora Vasquez, 37, has served ten years out of a total 30-year prison sentence after her miscarriage was ruled an "abortion" and was charged with aggravated murder.

Vasquez suffered a stillbirth in July 2007, during her ninth month of pregnancy. She called an ambulance after experiencing strong abdominal pain but fell unconscious due to the pain. When she woke up, she discovered that her baby had died. Police accused her of inducing a miscarriage.

SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR - A Salvadoran woman jailed for 30 years for a miscarriage deemed to be an illegal abortion on Friday pleaded for her freedom before a court revising her sentence.

"I am paying for a crime I didn't commit," Teodora Vasquez, 34, told the tribunal in San Salvador.

Judges hearing the matter adjourned the hearing until next Wednesday.
