The ordeal of an 11-year-old girl who became pregnant after repeated rapes by a relative has given visibility, albeit fleetingly, to the enormous obstacles that stand in the way of access to legal abortion in Bolivia.

After weeks of disseminating the case in the local media and thanks to the intervention of the Ombudsman’s Office, the girl was finally able to terminate her pregnancy on November 6. Since then, the subject has disappeared from public discussion, as if it had been an exceptional case.

Poland further erodes women’s rights in blatant defiance of EU principles

Will Europe sit back and watch?

NOVEMBER 4, 2020
By Eliza Rutynowska and Elena Crespi

Poland’s newly reshuffled Constitutional Tribunal ruled last week that abortion due to fatal or severe foetal impairment is no longer an option. Forcing women to give birth to severely malformed children, even those who have little to no chances of survival is now part and parcel of the Polish Constitution; what few abortion rights remained in the country have essentially vanished.

This travesty of justice was made possible due to the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party’s concerted effort in recent years to compromise democratic institutions, such as the Constitutional Tribunal, and to undermine the rule of law, by chipping steadily away at checks and balances, which are meant to ensure democratic oversight and safeguard people’s rights against state abuse.

US abortion policy is 'extremist hate' and 'torture', says UN commissioner
Trump administration’s ban on terminations is a crisis directed at women, warns Kate Gilmore

Liz Ford

The US policy on abortion is a form of extremist hate that amounts to the torture of women, the UN deputy high commissioner for human rights told the Guardian.

The attack on women’s rights was a “crisis”, organised and well-resourced by very extremist groups.

“We have not called it out in the same way we have other forms of extremist hate, but this is gender-based violence against women, no question,” Kate Gilmore said.

An 11-year-old Argentinian girl who was raped while in her grandmother’s care had a C-section earlier this week after doctors refused to give her an abortion, sparking a debate about choice in the South American country.

The girl became pregnant after her grandmother’s 65-year-old partner sexually abused her, according to local media reports. She had been in her grandmother’s care because her two older sisters had been abused by their mother’s partner, the Guardian reports.

An 11-year old girl who became pregnant after being raped was forced to give birth after Argentine authorities refused to allow her the abortion to which she was entitled.

The authorities ignored repeated requests for an abortion from the child, called “Lucía” to protect her identity, as well as her mother and a number of Argentine women’s right activists. After 23 weeks of pregnancy, she had to undergo a caesarean section on Tuesday. The baby is unlikely to survive.

Northern Ireland’s abortion law is forcing vulnerable women and girls to go through “physical and mental torture”, the supreme court in London has heard.

The court on Tuesday began hearing an application from the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC), which argues that criminalisation of abortion, even in the case of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormality, is incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
