Judge Amy Coney Barrett's recent confirmation into the Supreme Court could be a potential threat to abortion access and lead to even more "underground" abortions if the procedure becomes illegal in certain states, experts say.

Though underground abortions have continued in the wake of Roe v. Wade due to certain states' time-limiting abortion laws, those numbers could see a steep increase if states don't take individual responsibility to protect abortion rights, Carole Joffe, a sociologist and co-author of "Obstacle Course: The Everyday Struggle to Get an Abortion in America," told Insider.

This was nearly half a century ago, when abortion was illegal almost everywhere in the country and alternative newspapers were in their heyday. There was no Jane, though, not literally anyway. Yet at the same time, Jane was anybody.

On a winter morning, Anna* walked the aisles of an herbal-medicine store, picked up a bottle each of blue cohosh and black cohosh, along with a plastic bag of pennyroyal tea, and drove to the topless bar on the edge of town where she worked. There, she met Jules, another dancer. They performed on a small stage with crystal curtains, the green light of an ATM flashing on their left, until 9 p.m. The women, both in their 20s, then drove to the Motel 6 where Jules lived and entered her dim room on the second floor, which smelled of grape cigars. Anna pulled out the tinctures and tea and explained the plan. She was going to help Jules try to have an abortion.
