The New South Wales parliament is considering whether a 1900 law that criminalised abortion is appropriate for its regulation in 2019.

In 1900 it was widely accepted that women’s bodies and women’s sexuality were appropriately controlled by patriarchal power inherent in government, medicine, religion, and family life. The 1900 legislation was influenced by the racist ideology of eugenics in response to declining birthrates and claims that “selfish” white women were using abortion to control fertility.

This Open Letter From The Uniting Church Proves That Christians Can Support Abortion Rights

NSW is currently in the midst of a push to decriminalise abortion, and as you’d expect, many Christian churches are busy releasing outraged statements on the issue. The Uniting Church, however, has released a very different kind of open letter, throwing its support behind decriminalising abortion, and explaining why that stance is compatible with Christianity. It’s worth a read.

The letter manages to retain a lot of the nuance that is often lost in heated debates on abortion: affirming the Christian belief that life is sacred, but also acknowledging that this belief does not mean Christians must oppose abortion.

Scores of women who have had abortions have come out on social media urging authorities to arrest them, ahead of the New South Wales state parliament considering a decriminalisation bill this week.

NSW is the only Australian state or territory that has neglected to modernise abortion laws.

The Uniting Church has broken ranks with other religious institutions to throw its support behind decriminalising abortion in New South Wales.

NSW is the only Australian state or territory that has neglected to modernise abortion laws.

Last week a private member’s bill co-sponsored by 15 MPs from across the political divide was introduced to state parliament. It was expected to be debated as soon as Tuesday when parliament sits.
