Many researchers have demonstrated how investing in family planning leads to population control and human capital and national development. Therefore, all countries aspiring to achieve national development should prioritise increasing contraceptive use in order to control population increase.

In some African nations, like Nigeria, funding, and use of contraceptives, unfortunately, remains low. Tragically, the use of contraceptives is not widely accepted in many underdeveloped nations, like Nigeria, where progress is further impeded by a worsening economic slump caused by the population explosion.

At Least 1 in 4 Abortions in India Self-done at Home; ‘Unplanned Pregnancy’ Most Common Reason: Govt Data

At least one in every four abortions in India was performed by the woman herself at home, whereas almost half of the women said the main reason for seeking an abortion was an unplanned pregnancy, government data for 2019-21 analysed by CNN-News18 shows.

The data also shows that the share of abortions performed by the woman herself at home has increased by one per cent from the last analysed period of 2015-16.

Unplanned pregnancy and unsafe abortion is still a problem in some societies despite the increase in effective and safe methods of contraception and the distribution of information about these methods. Unsafe abortion constitutes a major threat to the health and lives of women and children.

Unsafe abortions carry a high risk of
maternal mortality and morbidity, accounting for more than 80,000 maternal
deaths per year. Although many countries do not keep statistics on abortions,
there is evidence that millions of "legal" and illegal abortions take
place in the world every year.

Papua New Guinea: Eliminate Unsafe Abortion

Marie Stopes PNG, the country’s largest provider of family planning and sexual and reproductive health services says more needs to be done to eliminate unsafe abortion in PNG.

MSPNG Country Director, Dr David Ayres raised concerns in relation to an incident recently reported in the news about a young lady, only 16-years old, who lost her life because of an unplanned pregnancy, which she was trying to abort.

A third of unplanned pregnancies aborted in Australia

Almost a third of unplanned pregnancies in Australia end in abortion while stillbirth is more common among migrant women with “non white” backgrounds, according to survey data released today by the Medical Journal of Australia.

The data, collected by researchers from La Trobe University and the University of Western Australia, attempts to establish the prevalence of abortions and stillbirths.

I’m pregnant, but I’m not going to have the baby. I’m having an abortion. It feels like a weight off my shoulders just to admit it.

I’m currently around 6 weeks, exhausted and emotional. I haven’t told many people that I’m having an abortion besides my partner, my Mum, a few carefully selected close friends and my line manager. (I have to organise time off work for the abortion).
