Abortion advocates have welcomed the passage of laws to decriminalise the procedure in South Australia.

South Australia is the latest Australian jurisdiction to formally decriminalise abortion, after the state's upper house ticked off new laws.

The passage of the Termination of Pregnancy Bill on Tuesday came after the lower house in February passed the legislation 29 votes to 15.

A historic bill to decriminalise abortion in South Australia has passed the State Parliament's Lower House, following a heated and lengthy debate.

Members of Parliament were granted a conscience vote on the bill, which moves abortion from the Criminal Law Consolidation Act and into healthcare legislation.

South Australia moves to modernise abortion laws in the state

The South Australian parliament is moving to reform abortion laws in the state, having introduced a bill that would remove outdated provisions in the current system.

The proposed legislation would remove abortion entirely from criminal law, treating it only as a health issue. It would bring South Australian abortion laws into line with the rest of Australia.

Regional doctors in remote South Australia are joining lobbyists in Adelaide calling for abortion law reform to be pushed through Parliament urgently, saying the current laws are placing barriers to termination access, particularly for regional women.

Port Lincoln's Dr Anna Kearney is one of two GP registrars on the Eyre Peninsula who is qualified to prescribe the early medication 'abortion pill' RU486.

The independent South Australian Law Reform Institute (SALRI) based at the University of Adelaide has recommended major changes to South Australian abortion laws in its report to the Attorney General published today .

“SALRI’s report recommends that abortion is decriminalised by making it a regulated medical procedure under health law as opposed to a criminal law issue,” says the Director of the SA Law Reform Institute, the University of Adelaide's Professor John Williams.

South Australia’s independent Law Reform Institute based at Adelaide of University has been asked by the State Government to consider changes to the State’s abortion laws with a view to improve access and modernise the practice in the State and with a view to making abortion a regulated medical procedure under health legislation as opposed to a criminal law issue.

Attorney-General, Vickie Chapman said the move was being undertaken as part of a broader review of abortion laws in South Australia, taking into account the wide views of the community.

A push to repeal South Australia's abortion law is underway, with a coalition lobbying state parliamentarians to remove abortion from the state's crimes act.

The South Australian Abortion Action Coalition wrote to politicians last month, after securing a commitment from over 20 professional and community organisations to support the repeal of the law.
