Minister for Health Simon Harris has ordered the Health Service Executive to investigate an alleged breach of patient information in relation to a woman who had an abortion at a Dublin hospital.

On Friday he described as “extraordinarily concerning and disturbing” the thought that “anyone’s patient details could be leaked”.

Only nine out of 19 maternity units will be in a position to offer abortion services by the planned introduction date of January 1st, it has emerged.

Sources also said that while 145 GPs signed the contract to provide abortion services to their patients, just 106 doctors had signed up to provide termination of pregnancy services to any woman seeking access to the abortion pill.

Clinics ‘shunned’ over abortion legislation meetings

Non-profit women’s health clinics have expressed frustration amid claims that they have been left out of plans to provide access to abortion in Ireland.

The Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) and the Well Woman Centre have indicated that they have the expertise to provide abortions at up to nine weeks’ gestation. They have not been included, however, in meetings between the Department of Health and medical experts preparing for the legalisation of abortion next January.
