Thousands attend Dublin abortion rights protest
March for Choice is first major march since timeframe of referendum unveiled

Thousands of people took to the streets of Dublin on Saturday calling for the liberalisation of Ireland’s abortion laws.

The demonstration began at the Garden of Remembrance at 2pm and progressed down O’Connell Street, before turning onto the quays and crossing over the Liffey. From there it proceeded up Pearse Street and towards the rally area in Merrion Square.

Abortion is a black and white issue. Those Repeal jumpers, designed in anger last year by campaigner Anna Cosgrave, have become a ubiquitous fashion and political statement.

On Saturday lunchtime there were thousands of them in evidence. Those elemental colours, symbolising darkness and light, stood out against the bright shafts of sunlight glinting on the ornamental pool in the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square in Dublin.

Pro-choice campaigners have gathered in London to call for a change to Ireland's strict abortion laws, expressing the hope that the country will engage in "respectful debate" ahead of the 2018 referendum.

The event was one of the first rallies since the Irish Government set an indicative timescale of early summer next year for a referendum on the section of the state's constitution that ensures tight legal restrictions on terminations.

Minister for Children Katherine Zappone has said she believes the public would not support a referendum proposing the extensive liberalisation of Ireland’s abortion laws recommended by the Citizens’ Assembly.

Her comments come as the Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment said it would oppose any “watering down” of the assembly recommendations, including the recommendation of 64 per cent of its members that termination of pregnancy without restriction should be lawful.

Minister for Children Katherine Zappone has said she is “deeply concerned” about venues withdrawing permission for anti-abortion and pro-choice group meetings because of pressure from rival organisations.

She said it was vital that people on all sides of the debate had an opportunity to gather in hotels and community centres to talk about the referendum on the Eighth Amendment, scheduled for May or June next year.

On Saturday 30 September 2017, the Abortion Rights Campaign (ARC) – a pro-choice alliance of which I am a member – is hosting its sixth annual March for Choice in Dublin city centre. It is a particularly significant event, as it will be our last march before next year’s referendum over whether to repeal the eighth amendment, the law that gives a foetus the same right to life as the mother.

In the summer of 2012, a few small pro-choice groups met up in Dublin to discuss collaborating. The result, the formation of the Irish Choice Network, gained momentum so quickly that the founders realised an even larger, all-island movement was needed. And so the ARC was formed.

Saturday shoppers, tourists and well-heeled residents of Belgravia in west London will encounter some unusual street art on Saturday, September 30th, when members of the London-Irish Abortion Rights Campaign will make 205,704 chalk markings on the pavement outside the Irish Embassy at 17 Grosvenor Place.

The organisation says “the markings will represent the 205,704 Irish and Northern Irish women who have travelled to Great Britain for an abortion since the 8th Amendment in 1983”.

Leticia had been bleeding heavily for two weeks when she arrived at Marie Stopes Mexico's clinic in Chiapas. Desperate to end her pregnancy, she had taken some pills from a friend. However as the days passed it became clear that something had gone badly wrong.

Despite excruciating pain and massive blood loss, she ignored her friend's pleas to seek medical help for fear of being thrown behind bars for procuring an illegal abortion. Until finally, weak from anaemia and wracked with pain, she struggled to our clinic, where my team diagnosed a septic abortion and referred her to the public hospital. Any further delay in treatment and she would have died.
