Pope Francis wrapped up a troubled visit to Belgium on Sunday by doubling down on his traditional views on abortion, calling the abortion law “homicidal”.

“Doctors who do this are — allow me the word — hitmen. They are hitmen," Francis said. “And on this you cannot argue. You are killing a human life.”

Debate over Queensland’s abortion laws has made headlines ahead of this week’s official start to the state election campaign.

Girls Activist Youth Organisation (GAYO) and Her Liberty say the media has a crucial role in reporting on challenges young women face after opting for unsafe abortion. The two organisations made the call during a day-long media orientation on unsafe abortion reporting among young women.

Her Liberty Project Manager, Kattie Mikwala, said many young women die due to unsafe abortions while some are leaving with serious problems following safe abortion. She observed that some young women take overdose drugs to terminate pregnancy while others use herbs, thereby resulting in serious complications to the extent of removing their uterus.

Thousands rallied across Peru for International Safe Abortion Day on September 28, demanding the right to safe, accessible abortions. Hundreds marched through the capital, Lima, under the banner of “The Right to Decide”.

Abortion is illegal in Peru, even in cases of rape. While abortion is technically allowed in cases where the pregnant person’s health or life is at risk, in practice it is difficult to access a safe abortion.

Kenya – Haunted by abortion, failed by policymakers

Thousands of women are dying every year in Kenya due to botched backstreet abortions.

By Hellen Shikanda

As we drive along the backstreets of Kibra slums in Nairobi, there are shoes dangling on power lines every few metres. Everyone has their theory as to what that signifies; one of those being that the shoes are mementos for people who died along those streets. The further we drive, the more we encounter them.

While the crammed houses and uninviting narrow alleys between them exude gloomy conditions, there is a visible sense of vibrancy in the people when they are outside.

Polish court rejects claim against police who made woman strip after taking abortion pills

Sep 28, 2024
Notes from Poland

A court has rejected a claim by a woman who accused police of abusing their powers during a controversial and widely reported case last year in which they intervened after she had taken abortion pills. Parts of the interaction – in which she was ordered to strip – were caught on film and broadcast by the media.

In its justification for exonerating the police – obtained by newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza – the court argued that the woman had “an interest in portraying herself as a victim of police brutality”, perhaps in order to obtain compensation, and that she had sought to publicise the case in the media.

Hundreds rally in the streets of Paris to support world abortion rights

Hundreds of people have marched in Paris in support of the right to abortion for women across the world

By DIANE JEANTET, Associated Press

PARIS -- Hundreds of people came out in Paris on Saturday, marching in support of the right to abortion for women across the world, just six months after France became the first country to guarantee in its constitution a woman's right to voluntarily terminate a pregnancy.

The protest, organized by civil society groups to mark International Safe Abortion Day, also called for greater and easier access to abortion in France, denouncing budget cuts, staff reductions and the closure of abortion centers and maternity wards, which organizers say all contribute to penalizing women.
