Australia – ‘Abortion will always be part of my journey’: Georgie Purcell’s message to anti-choicers

"I owe an explanation on these decisions to precisely nobody, but it seems nothing is off limits to anti-choicers.”

In the days following her pregnancy announcement, Victorian MP Georgie Purcell was bombarded with online vitriol from anti-choice activists who criticised her for the abortions she had in the past.

Speaking in the Victorian parliament on Thursday, Purcell said abortion would always be part of her journey into motherhood and she doesn’t shy away from that.

“When I made this deeply personal announcement, I spoke of how this pregnancy has only solidified my belief in reproductive choice,” the Animal Justice Party MP told parliament.

Judge rules a 'buffer zone' of 50 metres 'necessary' around clinics

Brian Jenkins is among the protesters who must continue keeping their distance from Quebec's abortion clinics, after the province's Superior Court upheld a law requiring a 50-metre buffer zone.

It's a blow to the vice-president of the Quebec Life Coalition (QLC). The organization with a mission of "building a Christian society" challenged a 2016 provincial law preventing groups from protesting within 50 metres of an abortion clinic.

A 28-year-old woman has received a suspended sentence after she pleaded guilty to having a medical abortion. The woman is understood to have bought abortifacient pills from the internet, and used them to induce abortion at an early stage of the pregnancy in November 2024.

But she went to the hospital after experiencing abdominal pain, and after confirming that she had had a medical abortion, the doctors examining her saw fit to inform the police.

The woman was subsequently arraigned under summons, and on her guilty plea was sentenced to a 22-month jail term suspended for two years.

5 years on, abortion pill Mifegymiso still stalled in Korea’s regulatory limbo

Yun-mi
2025.07.30

Five years have passed since the Constitutional Court ruled that the abortion law was unconstitutional, but abortion by medication remains in a legal gray area. Nothing shows this better than the failure to introduce the abortion pill Mifegymiso (mifepristone and misoprostol) into Korea due to legislative gaps.

“We need a legal basis to begin the approval process for Mifegymiso tablets. Currently, we cannot proceed with its substantive review due to a lack of such a basis,” an official at the Drug Approval Division of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) told journalists on Wednesday.

Disability rights are human rights: Inclusive reproductive justice in Nigeria

July 29, 2025
Rachel Ogunlana, Communications and Engagement Advisor for Ipas Nigeria Health Foundation

With unsafe abortion remaining a leading cause of maternal death in Nigeria, it is critical that women with disabilities have access to comprehensive reproductive health services—including contraception and safe abortion—free from fear, stigma, and shame, and with the dignity every person deserves.

Women with disabilities face multiple, intersecting challenges that often result in being denied essential reproductive health services when they need them most. Many require specialized care before, during, and after an abortion due to physical or cognitive impairment, yet this care is frequently unavailable or inaccessible. They are also routinely excluded from receiving accurate information about their reproductive health, leaving them unable to make informed, life-saving decisions.

Opinion: Contraception Gives Young Women Control of Their Bodies—So Why Are So Many Girls Afraid to Use it?

One-third of young women who don't take birth control say they fear its side effects. Misinformation plays a role, a health expert says.

As long as contraception has been widely available, misconceptions about its safety—from weight gain fears to claims you need a birth control “cleanse” every few years—have scared some young women away from using it. Today, this kind of misinformation is no longer solely circulated in locker rooms or sleepovers. In the modern digital world, active misinformation and disinformation campaigns that deter people from using contraception circulate on social media—reaching millions.

The origin of this issue varies. Sometimes, rumors about birth control are intentionally created and promoted for political purposes; this is disinformation. Sometimes, false claims are unintentionally spread by people who believe their statements are true. Other times, one person misrepresents their real, lived experience as a universal truth.

The U.S. is destroying $9.7 million in contraceptives. Is there another option?

July 28, 2025
By Rachel Treisman, NPR

The State Department has confirmed plans to destroy millions of dollars' worth of taxpayer-funded contraceptives meant for women in low-income countries. The controversial move comes as the Trump administration continues to scale back foreign aid.

A stockpile of family planning products — including IUDs, implants and pills — worth $9.7 million has been stuck at a warehouse in Belgium since the administration dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and froze foreign aid earlier this year, according to statements from multiple humanitarian groups and U.S. lawmakers.

A conservative Christian GP has been found guilty of professional misconduct after complaints were raised over more than a decade worth of his “offensive” social media posts about abortion, the LGBTQI+ community and Covid.

Lawyers for Dr Jereth Kok have blasted Tuesday’s ruling by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), saying it represents a “deeply concerning shift in regulatory scope over personal speech”.
