Trump’s former Special Representative for Global Women’s Health and a long-time anti-abortion activist, Valerie Huber, argued recently in an opinion piece in The Hill that an international anti-abortion agreement she spearheaded is one of the “most underused diplomatic assets in America’s current foreign policy toolkit.”

Huber, now CEO of The Institute for Women’s Health, served during the first Trump administration, where she was instrumental in the creation of the October 2022 Geneva Consensus Declaration (GCD). Signed by 41 countries, the GCD is a nonbinding international agreement with the stated goal of promoting better “health for women, the preservation of human life, strengthening of the family as the foundational unit of society, and protecting every nation’s national sovereignty in global politics.”

Far-right activist sentenced in Poland over abortion protest clash

A prominent far-right activist has been sentenced to 10 months of unpaid community service for manhandling a protester during mass demonstrations triggered by a tightening of Poland’s abortion laws.

A Warsaw court ruled on Friday that Robert Bąkiewicz must carry out 30 hours of supervised community work per month and pay 5,000 zloty (around €1,200) in compensation to women’s rights activist Angelika Domańska.

Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko has called for changes to search engine algorithms so that abortion-related queries surface links to family support centers before anything else.

“So that when you type in the search bar looking for clinics where you can get an abortion, the first results that come up are information about family support centers […] and only then the websites of those clinics, including information about what an abortion entails and its health consequences,” Matviyenko said at a meeting of the Presidential Council on the Implementation of State Demographic Policy.

The conversation around reproductive healthcare in Nigeria rarely remains calm for long. In Lagos State, the ongoing suspension of the Safe Termination of Pregnancy (STOP) guideline underscores the deep controversy and critical need surrounding safe abortion access. Worldwide, voices are increasingly advocating for decriminalisation to prevent unsafe practices and save lives. One of the recurring questions is: what happens to women whose pregnancies place their lives in danger when the healthcare system itself becomes uncertain about how to respond?

That question has resurfaced following renewed public debate over the suspension of Lagos State’s Safe Termination of Pregnancy (STOP) Guidelines. Introduced to provide medical practitioners with clarity on managing complicated pregnancies within the boundaries of Nigerian law, the guidelines were suspended in 2022 amid controversy and public backlash. Since then, healthcare advocates, medical professionals and reproductive health organisations have continued to express concern that the suspension may have created more confusion than protection.

The fight for abortion rights in Australia is far from over

Abortion is legal in every Australian state and territory, after decades of campaigning. But it wasn’t long ago that I was a doctor living in Albury NSW (where abortion was still in the Crimes Act), and therefore worked across the river in Wodonga Victoria to provide abortion that was both legal and government-funded.

In 2019, abortion was finally, finally decriminalised in NSW.

Many of us who campaigned for that legalisation might have felt like we’d achieved our goal– that the work was done. But Trump’s US is showing us how quickly those hard-fought rights can be lost, and the threat is closer to home than you might think.

The anti-abortion activist Joanna Howe has conceded she may have used a “scam” email featuring a picture of sugar glider joeys, referring to them as human foetuses, to promote her views – but it “was an insignificant detail”.

In a video posted to Facebook on Wednesday afternoon, Howe said it appeared she had been “scammed” when someone emailed her claiming to give details about their medical abortion, including an image that Howe referred to as twin girls she called Ruth and Emma.

This year the United Nations (UN) hosted the 70th Commission on the Status of Women conference, a gathering of dignitaries, diplomats and civil society leaders who annually take stock of progress towards gender equality.

Its successes have been praised by women leaders, notably the vote for the agreed conclusions despite opposition from the United States (US), and the fact that thousands of civil society representatives from all over the world overcame visa, travel and funding restrictions to participate in person. Traditionally, the civil society organisations that participate are progressive, setting a feminist agenda that expands gender equality.

But now, an alternative civil society gathering is attempting something altogether different.

“Abortion is the cowardly act of murdering a defenceless baby,” reads one post on the now-deleted X account of Robert Kenyon, Reform UK’s candidate for the Makerfield by-election.

… The revelations about Kenyon’s alleged anti-abortion social media activity, published in the Observer, come after openDemocracy and the Fuller Project revealed Reform’s growing antagonism towards abortion rights.

We found a 40% increase in abortion mentions by nearly 80 Reform politicians, supporters, hard-right news websites and far-right influencers over the past two years, as well as an uptick in pro-Reform accounts sharing anti-abortion disinformation and emotive language.

After a tense few weeks during which U.S. courts twice revoked and reinstated telehealth access to the abortion pill mifepristone, the drug remains available without an in-office appointment—for now. But doctors and policy experts worry that uncertainty and any future rollback in access will make things harder for people seeking to end a pregnancy and place added pressure on the health care system.

Since 2022, when the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned the right to abortion enshrined in Roe v. Wade, antiabortion proponents have focused on mifepristone. They claim, despite a wealth of evidence to the contrary, that the drug is unsafe. First approved in the U.S. in 2000, mifepristone is currently used here in combination with the drug misoprostol up to 10 weeks into a pregnancy.
