The current rate of unsafe abortion in Nigeria remains a source of concern to many and has necessitated the consistent call for expansion of access to safe abortion in the country.

In Nigeria, abortion is illegal while the only legal way to have an abortion in Nigeria is if having the child is going to put the mother's life in danger. In other words, abortion is illegal in Nigeria and carries a heavy jail sentence of up to 14 years imprisonment, unless it is performed to save the life of the pregnant woman.

Unsafe abortions kill 13% of Lagos mothers – Gynaecologists raise alarm

Unsafe termination of pregnancy contributes up to 13% of maternal deaths in Lagos State, the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), Lagos Sector, disclosed during an advocacy visit to the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, on Wednesday.

Led by former SOGON National President, Prof. Rotimi Akinola, and Lagos Sector Chairman, Prof. Abidoye Gbadegesin, the delegation outlined persistent challenges in maternal and neonatal mortality, calling for policy reforms and expanded professional involvement.

Nigeria – Economic hardship plunges married women into unsafe abortion, ignoring life-threatening risks

Low uptake of family planning services, aided by economic hardship, is taking its toll on some married couples who, burdened by unplanned pregnancies, now resort to unsafe abortions despite the associated risks.

Mrs Bisi Lateef (not her real name) borrowed the sum of N15,000 from a friend to procure an abortion in February, and it took her one month to finally pay it back.

The woman, now in her early 40s, recalled what she experienced while ending her fifth pregnancy. According to her, she would have loved to keep it, but the resources to care for another baby were not available.

As Lagos seeks to save more women from abortion-related deaths
