‘Dear reader, put yourself in the position of a child raped and denied an abortion’
28 September 2018
I am a 14-year-old aspiring human rights activist and this is why I believe in women’s and girls' right to safe abortion in cases of rape.
Abortion is a very complicated topic, as there is no black or white; there is an infinite amount of shades of grey in between. Many people across the world are anti-abortion and pro-life. Some believe that abortion is murder and women should not be given that choice, but I believe this is problematic and unfair because there are many cases when a woman should have the right to terminate a fetus.
Indian court rejects abortion for 10-year-old rape victim
28 July 2017
India's Supreme Court has refused to allow an abortion for a 10-year-old girl, allegedly raped by her uncle, on the grounds that she is too far into her pregnancy.
A doctors' panel told the court that, at 32 weeks, termination of the pregnancy would be "too risky".
Her pregnancy was discovered two weeks ago when she complained of stomach ache and her parents took her to hospital. A lower court had earlier turned down her plea on similar grounds.

10-Year-Old Rape Survivor Can't Have Abortion, Says Supreme Court
Reported by A Vaidyanathan, Edited by Shuchi Shukla | Updated: Jul 28, 2017 16:28 IST
New Delhi: A 10-year-old raped by her uncle will not be allowed to have an abortion, the Supreme Court ruled today, rejecting the petition by a Supreme Court lawyer. The court said it was basing its decision on the assessment of doctors who said that a medical termination was not safe either for the girl or the foetus. She is 32 weeks pregnant.
The court had earlier this week asked doctors at Chandigarh's PGI to examine the girl to see if an abortion was safe. It has today ordered that proper medical care be provided to the girl child.

Abortion plea for raped 10-year-old

New Delhi, July 22, 2017
A lawyer has petitioned the Supreme Court to allow a 10-year-old "rape survivor" in her 26th week of pregnancy to abort the foetus "in the interest of justice, equity and good conscience".
Indian law bans abortions beyond 20 weeks unless there's an immediate threat to the would-be mother's life.
Alakh Alok Srivastava's petition, which is yet to be listed for hearing, says the girl's uncle had repeatedly raped her and that her pregnancy "has left many medical experts dumbfounded" because of her age. It adds that the girl's doctors have said her pelvic bones are not fully developed because of her age and, therefore, "tolerating a full-term pregnancy at this tender age is very risky".
