The Canadian federal election is just a few days away. While some voters have cast their ballots early, many are waiting for Monday, April 28 to hit the polls. Although political tensions between Canada and the U.S. and the ongoing trade war have been major talking points, human rights and access to health care also remain a top-of-mind concern for vulnerable Canadians, particularly women and members of the LGBTQ community.

In 2022, many Canadians have watched as the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, reversing the constitutional right to a safe and legal abortion. The repealing of abortion laws caused many to wonder whether the same could happen in Canada, and highlighted areas of access to abortion that need improvement.

Half way through this federal election campaign and one word has yet to be uttered: abortion.

Maybe it’s because U.S. President Donald Trump continues to threaten our economy. Maybe it’s because Liberal Leader Mark Carney appears to be heading toward a win. Maybe it’s because Pierre Poilievre declared himself to be pro-choice. But so far the Conservative leader has escaped the pesky question his predecessors grappled with: how would he safeguard a women’s right to choose?

The best-selling author and gynecologist shared an interview on her Instagram account on Tuesday that she conducted with her hometown paper, the Winnipeg Free Press, on her plans.

A former Conservative MP who says he left the party because of his "convictions" claims that the number of anti-abortion Conservative members of Parliament is growing, and that anti-abortion activists have influence within the party apparatus.

Richmond-Arthabaska MP Alain Rayes made the comments in a new documentary, "La peur au ventre," directed by Quebec filmmaker Léa Clermont-Dion, which explores the anti-abortion movement in Canada following the reversal of Roe v. Wade in the United States.

It was on a cold and blustery afternoon last month. About 60 reproductive justice activists gathered outside the Confederation Building in St. John’s to defend reproductive rights.

The May 17 event was organised as a counter-rally to the annual March For Life held by anti-choice activists. But the March for Life protestors didn’t show up this year.

OTTAWA — Federal cabinet minister Soraya Martinez Ferrada was determined to put a human face — hers — on a political story that was fiercely argued in the abstract this week, inside and outside Parliament.

The tourism minister stood in the House of Commons during question period and told MPs she had an abortion at age 18, after she discovered she was pregnant shortly after arriving back in Chile — a country her parents had fled years earlier as political refugees of the Pinochet regime.

In the wake of what appears to be the undoing of the right to choose to have an abortion in the United States, former American ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman, who served under Democrat president Barack Obama, says he’s worries this is just the beginning.

“I think that if we think it’s just Roe v. Wade, then I think we’re mistaken. I think that there is a fairly significant movement afoot to reorient the court, reorient government, reorient how we behave domestically and internationally. And clearly, I think it’s a continued threat to democracy,” Heyman told The Hill Times in an interview last week.
