EU Commission rejects new abortion financing proposal, points to existing fund

Countries may need to amend an existing fund to use it to support women who wish to travel to access abortion within the EU.

BRUSSELS — The European Commission will not set up a new financing scheme to expand abortion access in Europe, rejecting a proposal backed by nearly 1.2 million European citizens.

The Commission, however, said countries could use an existing fund to help women pay for abortion services — something activists behind the campaign described as a “victory.” But first, some countries may need to amend programs covered by this fund.

The battle over abortion is intensifying in the European Parliament, as the European Commission is due to decide by March whether to follow up on the citizens’ initiative ‘My Voice, My Choice.’

On Thursday morning, the team of Geadis Geadi, a member of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, which opposes abortion rights, hung a large poster in the courtyard of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. It depicted a fetus and the slogan: “It’s a life, it’s not a choice”. Other ECR lawmakers, including French MEP Nicolas Bay, backed the action.

Final push on abortion rights initiative ahead of Commission decision

Proposed EU fund would help women travel for abortion care

With the clock ticking on a crucial Commission decision, the abortion rights initiative My Voice My Choice is mounting a final push to force EU action, as political battle lines harden in the European Parliament.

On 2 March, the European Commission must decide whether to give legal follow-up to the My Voice My Choice initiative, which seeks to improve and secure access to abortion across the EU.

“If the European Commission refuses, 20 million women will be left without access to safe abortion – left to die in hospital beds instead of receiving life-saving care. If they say yes, we will have won. Safe abortion will become a reality for everyone in the EU,” My Voice My Choice said in a statement.
