UK: The Anti-Abortion Movement Is Coming for Contraception Too

There is a pattern here, and we are calling it out.

This week, reproductive rights news has been full of the same old anti-abortion playbook: spread stigma, muddy the facts, pretend healthcare is dangerous, and then act shocked when people demand easier access to basic reproductive care.

The latest target? The morning-after pill.

Emergency contraception works best the sooner it is taken. Yet access still depends on whether your local pharmacy is open, whether you can travel, whether you can pay, and whether you are forced into a conversation at a counter when what you need is safe, effective, time-sensitive healthcare.

Poll suggests UK public supports morning-after pill being sold in corner shops

The morning-after pill should be sold in corner shops and petrol stations like paracetamol, doctors have suggested, after a poll highlighted public concerns about accessing the contraceptive.

Almost half of the UK population (43 per cent) say it would be difficult to access emergency contraception on a Sunday, while almost two-thirds (65 per cent) believe it would be difficult to obtain after 10pm.

Results also suggest only 7 per cent of people believe it would be difficult to access emergency contraception during the daytime on a weekday, with perceived barriers rising dramatically outside typical opening hours.

Whether a woman should or should not have an abortion is a choice that people make and others like to have opinions about. We know this – and have done for some time. Hence, terminations are still illegal in many parts of the world, including Malta, El Salvador, and Egypt, and highly restricted in even more – the overturning of Roe v Wade in 2022 has enabled 26 US states to have either hostile or illegal policies against it.

Sometimes, the people who are trying to influence your decision are a little closer to us. It might be your partner, a family member, or a friend. One person it really shouldn’t be, though, is your doctor. And yet, far too often this seemingly obvious fact is being ignored.

Inside the right-wing push against abortion rights in Scotland

A RECENT review of Scotland's abortion laws led to widespread right-wing outrage last week. One clip that went particularly viral was a GB News segment featuring Lois McLatchie Miller, who works for Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF).

“The Scottish Government have commissioned a report to suggest that they allow abortion all the way up to birth for most social reasons,” she told the broadcaster’s presenters.
